SAN DIEGO, Calif. - LMU freshman Harry Loasby broke the Hong Kong Men's 3k National record while Michael Vorgitch and Kelli Sugimoto were the individual champions of their respective races Friday night at the 37th Annual Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State.
Loasby, who had unofficially broke the record in a hand-timed 3k race earlier this season, did so officially Friday, placing second overall in 8:41.02. He easily eclipsed the previous record of 8:50.82, set by Chan Ka Ho on May 30, 2009.
Sugimoto and Danielle Shanahan joined in the personal record setting Friday night. Sugimoto, a junior, won the women's 3k in 9:42.26 while Shanahan, a sophomore, placed second in the women's 1,500m in 4:25.16, besting her previous low time by .16 seconds.
Vorgitch, a senior, won the men's 3,000m steeplechase in 9:16.99. His younger sister Madelyn Vorgitch, a freshman, placed eighth in a time of 18:06.40 in her first collegiate 5,000m run.
The Lions also got top 10 finishes from Christopher Fredlund in the 3k (3rd, 8:41.21), Kayla de Bondt in the 1,500m (6th, 4:30.26), Kyra Burke in the 3,000m steeplechase (4th, 11:35.17), Brandon Vientos in the 5,000m (3rd, 14:50.17) and Lance Capel in the 5,000m (10th, 15:10.07).
Next week, the Lions will send athletes to compete at the Stanford Invitational and the California Collegiate Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.
