A seven-run second inning helped propel LMU (14-11) to a 9-3 victory over Hawaii (9-16) on Wednesday from LMU's Page Stadium. Facing eight Rainbow pitchers, LMU plated nine total runs on 12 hits, including the seven runs in the second on five hits.
After a sacrifice fly from Tanner Donnels and an RBI-single from David Edwards resulted in LMU's first two runs of the game in the first inning, junior Ryan Erickson provided a big blow in the seven-run second, belting a bases-clearing three-RBI double into left field to bring home Donnels, David Fletcher and Austin Miller. Ted Boeke also drove in multiple runs in the second inning, delivering a two-RBI double in front of a Kent Burckle RBI-single that capped the scoring run and left LMU with a comfortable 9-0 lead after two innings.
Boeke finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored, the double, a stolen base and two RBI, while Burckle was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Joining Boeke with three hits was Fletcher, who contributed a perfect 3-for-3 night with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored to record his team-high tying ninth multi-hit game of the season. LMU was 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts, including a pair swiped by Edwards.
LMU used a total of five pitchers to hold on to the early cushion. Freshman Sean Watkins got the start and earned the "staff day" victory after throwing three scoreless innings and striking out five in his first career start. The right-hander, who allowed just two hits over the three frames, moved to 1-0 and kept his ERA at an unblemished 0.00 with the start. Senior Kevin Glomb was the first out of the pen, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing one run before Tyler Cohen surrendered two runs over two frames of his own. Staples of the back end of LMU's bullpen, Michael Silva and J.D. Busfield each contributed a scoreless inning to finish off the night on the mound and seal the victory.
Kaeo Aliviado had an outstanding all-around game for Hawaii, making a handful of tremendous diving catches in centerfield while also collecting a pair of RBI in the loss.
LMU will return to West Coast Conference play on Friday when it opens a three-game WCC home series with Gonzaga at 6 p.m.
