SACRAMENTO - Alex Finie scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday morning against Grand Canyon, propelling the LMU softball team to a 4-3 win over the Lopes on day two of action at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. The Lions (11-18) would split a pair of games on the day, falling 4-0 to Penn State Saturday afternoon.
Finie, when went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, led off the final half inning with a first-pitch, single to right center. Stephanie Maciel would lay down a sacrifice bunt, moving Finie to second, and an Amanda Dirks fly out to center allowed Finie to take third.
The Lopes' elected to intentionally walk the next two batters, loading the bases with two outs. But with Rachel Williams at the plate, Grand Canyon pitcher Taylor Nowlin threw a wild pitch out of the reach of her catcher, allowing Finie to scurry home for the game-winning run.
Each team scored a single run in the first and Grand Canyon would take a 3-1 lead in the third. The Lions countered in the fourth on a two-RBI single by Finie.
Stephanie Crist earned the complete-game victory, scattering eight hits and fanning two while allowing three runs (one earned). The win avenged a 10-2, six-inning setback to Grand Canyon on Friday.
The Lions could not solve Penn State for a second straight day, however, managing just five hits against the Nittany Lions.
PSU would score twice in the first and twice in the sixth as Rachael Farrington took the loss for the Lions.
