Box Score March 1, 2015 Box Score
The LMU baseball team (7-4) lost the rubber match of a three-game series with Nebraska on Sunday, falling 5-1 to the Huskers (6-4) at LMU's Page Stadium. The Lions managed just three total hits, including two from senior Chris Barnett.
Barnett, a native of Silverado, Calif., finished 2-for-3 with a double in the setback.
Right-hander Derek Burkamper was stellar as Nebraska's starter, registering five strikeouts and allowing just one run on two hits and a walk over seven innings. Burkamper improved to 1-0 with the victory. The Huskers used two relievers to seals the win, including Colton Howell to finish the game. Howell struck out two over the final inning.
Blake Headley completed a stellar three-game series on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Headley batted .500 with three doubles and five RBI in the three-game series.
Nebraska, which totaled eight runs on 15 hits on Saturday, picked up right where it left off on Sunday, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first and never looking back. Jake Schleppenbach led things off with a single before moving to third on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt from Scott Schreiber. A wild pitch pushed the first run home while Headley blooped an RBI-single into centerfield to cap the scoring run.
After the Lions cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from David Edwards, the Huskers responded with three more runs in the third to run the tally to 5-1. Steven Reveles doubled to get the inning going before a walk and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out. Ryan Boldt delivered the first run with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by a two-RBI double from Headley to clear the bags.
A solid defensive play by right fielder Austin Darby thwarted a Lion rally in the fifth, as the senior caught a fly ball and fired a strike home to cut down Edwards who was trying to score on a sacrifice fly. A one-out walk and a double from Barnett put runners at second and third and had the momentum shifting toward the Lions, but Darby made sure Nebraska escaped unscathed with the strong throw.
Although he struggled early, freshman Tylor Megill settled in relatively nicely to finish the game with seven innings pitched, allowing the five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk for LMU. The native of Huntington Beach, Calif. retired the final 14 hitters he faced, but the damage was already done, as he was ultimately tagged with the loss to fall to 2-1.
LMU will look to get back on track on Tuesday when it travels to Long Beach State for a game at 6 p.m.
