The LMU baseball team (5-2) swept a Saturday doubleheader by way of a 10-0 shutout victory over Saint Joseph's (1-2) at Page Stadium. The Lions took game one on Saturday by a score of 7-3. David Fletcher and Tanner Donnels each posted three hits in the finale, while freshman Tylor Megill got the start and earned the victory to improve to 2-0.
Donnels finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles and a career-high tying four RBI, while Fletcher went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. LMU also drew five hit-by-pitches to run its season total to 24. Donnels last collected four RBI on April 12, 2014 against Saint Mary's.
Megill went the first five shutout frames, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits and three walks before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Tyler Cohen went the next two scoreless, followed by Sean Watkins and J.D. Busfield for an inning each. LMU's pitching staff registered 18 strikeouts, the most since at least 1998 (previous: 17 - 2x; last vs. Portland on 5/17/03). LMU managed 39 strikeouts over the course of the three-game series against the Hawks.
Pat Vanderslice got the start for SJU, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing six runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three. The Hawks committed three errors, with all three coming in the six-run Lion fifth inning. Vanderslice was ultimately charged with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.
Stefan Kancylarz collected a third of SJU's six hits, finishing 2-for-3.
LMU wasted no time taking a lead, scoring once in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI-double from Donnels. The two-bagger plated Fletcher who had reached with a single and stole second. The native of Cypress, Calif. is now 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.
LMU exploded for a six-run fifth inning to run away with the game. The frame was highlighted by RBI-singles from Fletcher, Donnels and Watkins. Three more Lion runs in the sixth inning pushed LMU into double-digits for the second time this year. A bases-loaded walk to Fletcher forced in the first run before Donnels drove in two more with a double to centerfield to cap the scoring run.
LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to UC Riverside for a game at 6 p.m.
