The LMU baseball team (4-2) evened a three-game series with Saint Joseph's (1-1) on Saturday afternoon by way of a 7-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader from Page Stadium. The two teams will play the rubber game of the series at 6 p.m. tonight.
LMU trailed 3-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh, but the Lions posted three runs on four hits in the seventh to take a lead it would not relinquish. Sophomore Austin Miller delivered the big hit in the inning, lacing a two-RBI double down the right field line to bring home Marcus Still and Chris Barnett. Barnett had previously reached on one of LMU's four hit-by-pitches, while Still took over on the bases following a pinch-hit RBI single from Joe Christian that plated the first run of the frame.
The Lions added three more runs for good measure in the eighth, as Sean Watkins belted the first pitch of the inning over the Mikos Blue Monster in left field for his second homer of the year. Miller once again came up clutch later in the frame, belting a two-RBI triple over the head of John Brue in centerfield to plate Joe Murray and Ted Boeke.
Miller finished the game 2-for-4 with the career-best four RBI. Making his first start of the year, senior David Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Junior Michael Silva was outstanding in relief for LMU, tossing three scoreless frames and allowing just two hits over the final three innings. With the late-inning offensive output, Silva earned the victory and improved to 1-1. Senior Kevin Glomb also excelled out of the bullpen, throwing two scoreless innings of relief and striking out one.
Joe Manion took the loss for SJU, allowing three runs on two hits as the first player out of the Hawk bullpen. Brue continued his hot streak to start the year, belting his second homer in as many games as part of a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBI.
