Box Score Feb. 20, 2015 Box Score
Senior Colin Welmon struck out a career-best 12 batters on Friday night, but the Lions scored only one run on three hits and stranded 10 runners on base as Saint Joseph's (1-0) defeated LMU (3-2) by a count of 2-1 at LMU's Page Stadium. Welmon allowed five hits and did not walk a batter, but surrendered what proved to be a game-winning home run in the seventh off the bat of John Brue.
LMU took the lead in the third inning as Billy Wilson singled to left field and eventually came around to score on an RBI-double from Tanner Donnels. LMU's only other hit came off the bat of Jimmy Jack, but LMU did benefit from six walks and four hit-by-pitches.
An unearned run charged to Welmon allowed Saint Joseph's to even the tally at one run apiece in the sixth as Brian Lau reached on an error charged to Ted Boeke at third base. Welmon struck out Matt Maul on the ensuing play, but back-to-back singles from Taylor Boyd and Stefan Kancylarz plated the run.
After drawing even in the sixth, Brue took it upon himself to hand the Hawks the lead, belting the first offering of the seventh into the trees in right-centerfield for his first homer of the year. The round-tripper saddled Welmon with the loss, dropping his record to 1-1 on the season.
Freshman Justin Aungst was stellar in his first career appearance for the Hawks, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just two walks while striking out four to claim the victory and improve to 1-0. Lansing Veeder, who went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts at the plate, left the at bats behind him after taking over in the ninth on the mound, pitching a perfect frame, including striking out two, to record the save.
Sophomore David Fletcher, who had hit safely in 19 straight games dating back to 2014, finished 0-for-2 with two walks, snapping his streak.
LMU and Saint Joseph's will now play a doubleheader tomorrow to conclude the three-game series. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., with the regularly-scheduled 6 p.m. game still on tap.
