The LMU baseball team (2-0) took the Opening Weekend series over San Jose State by way of a 3-1 victory over the Spartans (0-2) on Saturday night at Page Stadium.

Redshirt-junior Trevor Megill, making his first start since April 6, 2013, earned the victory after tossing six innings and allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four. Sophomore Tyler Cohen pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning before J.D. Busfield entered and closed the door on the Spartans with a scoreless ninth inning to record his second save in as many games.

In support of the solid pitching outing, LMU received two-hit days from sophomore David Fletcher and senior Tanner Donnels. Fletcher finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, while Donnels was a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Left-hander Jonathan Hernandez got the start and was tagged with the loss for San Jose State, as he tossed six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks.

A one-out walk to Marcus Still got the Lions moving in the right direction in the bottom of the first before Fletcher pulled a single through the left side to send Still to third. Donnels took advantage of the RBI opportunity, lining a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Lions on the board.

San Jose State drew even at one run apiece in the third as a leadoff walk to Cory Olivet came around to bite Megill. The right-hander lost Olivet on five pitches before a dribbler to third base resulted in an out but moved the runner up 90 feet. Another productive out, this time a grounder to short, pushed Olivet to third base before Megill fired a fastball to the backstop that went for a wild pitch and allowed San Jose State to score the equalizer without the benefit of a hit.

Fletcher and Donnels combined to reclaim the LMU lead in the fifth inning as Fletcher lined a triple into the right-centerfield gap before coming in to score on a Donnels single one pitch later.

Leading 2-1 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Lions posted an insurance run to push the tally to 3-1. Jimmy Jack started the inning with a pinch-hit single back up the middle before being replaced on the bases by Ryan Erickson. Erickson was then gifted 90 feet on an errant pickoff throw from Spartan reliever Myles Richard, setting the table for an RBI-double off the bat of Austin Miller.

With the series already in hand, LMU will look for the sweep of the Spartans tomorrow at 1 p.m. Tylor Megill will make his first career start for the Lions, opposed by right-hander Logan Handzlik for San Jose State.
