LOS ANGELES - West Coast Conference leader Gonzaga hit a blistering 77 percent from the field in the first half, including 9-of-13 from beyond the arc as the LMU women's basketball team fell, 82-59, Thursday night in Gersten Pavilion.
The Lions suffered an even shorter bench as Olivia Lucero, who started the last two games, was held out with concussion symptoms. In her place, sophomore Shelbi Aimonetti earned her first career start, finishing with three points, one assist, one steal and just one turnover in 19 minutes of action.
LMU was led by Sophie Taylor and Leslie Lopez-Wood who finished with 21 and 15 points, respectively. Taylor also pulled down a game-high nine boards.
Gonzaga (20-4, 13-0 WCC), which played the longest game in WCC history last Saturday, had nine players put points on the board. Four Zags reached double-figures including Georgia Stirton with 17, Elle Tinkle with 16, Keani Albanez with 15 and Lindsay Sherbert with 11.
Tinkle would open the game with a three for Gonzaga before the Lions answered with buckets by Bree Alford and Lopez-Wood. But the Zags would begin to pull away, using a 25-6 run to open up a 28-10 advantage with 13:24 to play in the half.
Lopez-Wood and Deshka Olson hit back-to-back threes, trimming the spread down to 12. But the Zags would not cool, going on a 9-0 run to push their lead over 20. Gonzaga would carry a 51-30 advantage into the break.
Gonzaga finally slowed in the second half, shooting just 7-for-24 (29 percent) from the field and scoring 31 points to LMU's 29.
