SPOKANE, Wash. - LMU couldn't answer the offensive efficiency of Gonzaga in the second game of the West Coast Conference schedule. The Bulldogs shot 60 percent (27-for-45) from the field to earn a 85-62 win at the McCarthey Center in Spokane, Wash., Wednesday night.
Adding to their efficiency, the Bulldogs (10-3, 2-0) missed just two free throw in 23 attempts (91.3 percent) and hit 10-of-18 from three (55.6 percent). The Lions (7-6, 0-2) finished the game shooting 40 percent (24-for-60), hitting 48.4 percent in the second half to overcome a 31 percent (9-for-29) clip in the first half. They finished 9-for-14 from the free throw line (64.3 percent) and 5-for-20 from three (25 percent)
Adom Jacko had his fourth double-double of the season to rebound from his lowest output of the season on Monday. He finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, going for five offensive boards. Steven Haney Jr. and Brandon Brown added 14 each. Kyle Wiltjer led all scorers with 26 points, knocking down 20 in the first half. He finished 4-for-6 from three. Domantas Sabonis finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
"Coaches will tell you that they turned the ball over too much or didn't shoot well," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We didn't shoot well. That happens here. Our shooting was an issue, but Gonzaga had a little something to do that. They don't get enough credit for their defense."
The Lions finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds, giving them a 20-9 edge in second chance points. The Lions also had just eight turnovers to Gonzaga's nine. They have not had more turnovers than opponent this season.
"I thought we did a good job in taking care of the ball and in the second half we found something," said Dunlap. "We discovered our post game with Adom. We are a new team and we are still learning who we are and I thought we found a little something there with Adom in the post."
The Lions have 10 days off before traveling to Malibu for a Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle at Pepperdine on Saturday, Jan. 2 at 5 pm. The game will be aired live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and on KXLU 88.9 FM.
