FULLERTON, Calif. - Steven Haney Jr. scored 23 of his 26 points in the second half to lead LMU to an 82-70 win over Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym Saturday night. The Lions (6-4) scored 47 second half points, shooting 60 percent in the frame, to earn the road win over the Titans (6-3).
Haney finished the game hitting 7-for-12 from three and 9-for-15 from the field overall in 31 minutes. The seven three-pointers is the most by a Lion since the 1990 season. Brandon Brown finished with 14 points and nine assist in 40 minutes. Coming off the bench was Marin Mornar with 20 points and Petr Herman with a career-high 12. Tre' Coggins led Cal State Fullerton with 18.
"I know we are figuring things out. The way we came out after getting back from Boise State and fought hard was special," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We have a long way to go, but we are learning how to play on the road and we showed growth tonight."
With fouls again early in the first half, the Lions had to go to the bench once again. Herman and Mornar answered the call scoring 22 of the Lions' 35 points.
Haney set the tone to start the second half, scoring the first seven points and 10 of the first 12, giving the Lions a double-digit lead they would never let go of.
"Petr really helped us tonight with a career-high, gave us a spark in the first half," said Dunlap. "Then in the second half we just really punched them. It went from four to 14 points in a hurry. Then from 15 minutes to about 5 minutes we played really smart basketball."
The Lions finished the game shooting 54.2 percent from the field, the best of the season, while holding the Titans to 41.5 percent. They had 21 assists and held a 22-6 edge in points off turnovers, forcing 13 while committing just 11 themselves.
"Our point guards had 14 of our 21 assists tonight," said Dunlap. "The way we passed the ball tonight was really special."
The Lions will break for finals and then host the final game of non-conference, taking on Jacksonville State on Friday, Dec. 18 at 6 pm. The game can be heard on KXLU 88.9 FM and seen on the LMU Sports Network.
