Nov. 12, 2015 LOS ANGELES - LMU men's water polo built an 8-3 lead at the half but couldn't hold it against 8th-ranked Long Beach State on Senior Day at the Burns Aquatics Center on Thursday afternoon. The 49ers outscored the Lions 7-1 in the second half to claim a 10-9 win in non-conference action.
The Lions finish the regular season 11-12 overall and the 49ers improve to 10-13. Freshman Dayne Jagga led all scorers with four goals for LMU while Duncan Lynde and Dimitrios Lappas had three each.
LMU held an 8-7 lead going into the fourth quarter only to see Zacchary Kappos tie the game at 8-8 with 6:33 to play. The Lions would regain the lead on a Nicholas Zanobini goal with 3:24 to play. The 49ers would finish the game with the final two goals. Lappas tied the game with 2:57 to play and then 37 seconds later, Kappos scored the game winner.
The Lions honored a dozen players who will graduate in May. Six are seniors and six are redshirt juniors. Being honored today are Daniel Camburn, Vuk Cvetkovic, Emanuel Di Stasio, Kyle Etrata, Liam Jennis, Scott Keighley, Milutin Mitrovic, Jack Mulligan, Cory Page, Tyler Testman, Kirk Wilenius, and Nicholas Zanobini.
The group will play the remaining games in honor of Tyler Testman's older brother, Kyle, who passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 4. Services for Kyle will be on Sunday, Nov. 15 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., at Marbella Country Club at 1:30 pm. The family has established the Kyle Testman Memorial Scholarship fund to benefit LMU students in the water polo program. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kyle Testman to LMU Men's Water Polo. The Lions now head to the 2015 Western Water Polo Association Championships. LMU earned the number two seed at 11-11 and 4-2 in WWPA play. They will open the tournament in Game No. 1 against the seventh-seed, California Baptist (15-12, 1-5) at 1:30 pm (MT). The Lions defeated No. 3 seed UC San Diego (11-13, 4-2) on Oct. 24 to earn the tie-breaker.
Game two of the tournament will feature No. 3 seed Tritons taking on No. 6 seed Santa Clara (10-19, 2-4) at 3:15 pm (MT), followed by No. 4 seed Fresno Pacific (10-15, 2-4) taking on No. 5 Air Force (8-16, 2-4) at 5 pm (MT). Seeds four through six all tied at 2-4 in WWPA play. Fresno Pacific earned the four seed thanks to a higher win percentage among the three and Air Force earned the head-to-head with Santa Clara thanks to an 11-9 win on Nov. 8.
