PROVO, Utah - BYU scored two goals in a 14 second span Saturday night at South Field as the 13th-ranked Cougars sent the LMU women's soccer team to a 2-0 setback in West Coast Conference play.
Entering the match in a tie for first place in the WCC standings, the Lions (12-5-1, 6-2-0 WCC) were seeking to maintain pace, and a potential first-ever win against the Cougars on their home turf. But back-to-back goals by Nadia Gomes kept BYU perfect at home this season (9-0), while moving the squad to 14-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in WCC play.
BYU momentarily moves into first place in the WCC standings with 19 points. San Francisco, which faces Saint Mary's Sunday, and LMU remain tied for second with 18 points. The Lions have just one match remaining on the regular-season slate, a Nov. 7 match-up with Pepperdine.
The Lions had chances early, including a shot by Shannon Kent in just the second minute forced a heady save by BYU goalkeeper Rachel Boaz. Kent had another chance go high in the 13th minute and Jocelyn Blankenship had a bending free kick also saved by Boaz.
The two-goal outburst came in the 53rd minute, beginning with a Gomes shot that deflected off LMU defender Jill Farley, putting it out of reach of goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt. Just 14 seconds later, Pruitt came off her line and dove to stop an onrushing Gomes. But the ball wold slip past Pruitt and Gomes found herself with an open net.
Despite the setback, Pruitt finished the match with a career-high nine saves and just her third loss of the season.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field for the final time this season on Saturday, Nov. 7, hosting their rival Waves in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup match-up. LMU's nine-member senior class will be honored prior to the 7 p.m. kick off.
