LOS ANGELES — LMU defeated UC Riverside 1-0 on Thursday night at Sullivan Field. The Lions finished with a 13-4 advantage in shots and held UC Riverside without a shot on goal.
The Lions earned six corner kicks and five shots in the first half but could not convert, leaving the match scoreless at halftime. The Lions generated early pressure with three corners in the opening 10 minutes and three
Cameron Bourne shots in the first 14 minutes. UC Riverside's first look came in the 17th minute, but the Lions limited the visitors to two off-target shots in the half.
Ane Joergensen put the Lions' lone shot on goal in the 34th minute, forcing a save, and
Sarah Melcher followed moments later with a shot wide left as the Lions continued to search for the opener.
Mia York put the Lions in front at 62:31, finishing a goal assisted by Bourne and
Alaina Lee to break the 0-0 tie. It was York's first goal of the season and collegiate career, and she was credited with the game-winner. Lee won back possession in the attacking half and laid the ball off to Bourne on the right side of the penalty area. She drove a cross through traffic that found York at the back post who settled the cross before hitting a low, left-footed shot into the net.
The Lions continued to create chances after taking the lead, with
Hailee Takao,
Gabi Morgan,
Ava Mathieson, and Bourne each recording shots while adding two more corner kicks. UC Riverside pushed late with two shots and an 89th-minute corner, but the Lions held the 1-0 score through the end of the second half.
Bourne recorded an assist, marking his first of the season, and led the Lions with four shots. Lee added an assist, her first of the season, and put her lone shot on goal.
JJ Hoover played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with a shutout.
Emma Gustad Myklebust has now started 40 consecutive matches and has played the full 90 minutes in 28 straight dating back to her first season.
