LOS ANGELES - With the game tied at 4-4 going into the second half, 15th-ranked LMU men's water polo used an eight-goal second half and stingy fourth quarter defense to claim their seventh straight win, defeating Santa Clara 14-8 at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 10-10 on the season and 4-1 in the Western Water Polo Association with the win. It matches the seven-game win streak the Lions posted in the 2012 season as the longest in program history. Santa Clara falls to 9-17 overall and 1-3 in the WWPA.
LMU did it with balance as six different players scored LMU's first six goals. Senior Emanuel Di Stasio finished with four goals and fellow senior Vuk Cvetkovic ended up scoring three to lead the Lions' offense. The Lions' defense held Santa Clara to just one goal in the book-end quarters, including no goals the final seven minutes of the game.
Redshirt junior Kirk Wilenius continues his big play in goal for the Lions, making 13 saves on the day.
Santa Clara scored with seven seconds to play in the first half to tie the game at 4-4. However, the Lions came out with three straight goals to start the second half to take a 7-4 lead.
Like the did in the first half, the Broncos fought back to cut the lead to 7-6.
The patterned continued, as the Lions built a 9-6 lead only to have Santa Clara cut it to a goal, 9-8, with 6:56 to play in the game.
From there, the Lions did not allow a goal and scored the final five to pull away for the win.
LMU stays home with another two-game weekend as they host San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 6 at 3 pm and then host UC Davis in the final WWPA contest of the season on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 12 pm.
