TORREJON, Madrid, Spain -Showing its reach across the globe, LMU continued its tour while sending back some well wishes as they spent their final day in Madrid before flying to Barcelona on Sunday morning. The Lions had a full pre game practice, followed by the coaches participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. They then took on the Angola National Team, who is participating in the upcoming FIBA World Championships in Spain.
Basketball continued to be the theme of the trip for the Lions, but it reached out to draw awareness through the ALS Challenge (visit www.ALS.org for more information), which has coaching staffs of all sports showing support by dunking buckets of ice water over their heads. The Lions did it Spain-style.
But the attention of the day was on their second of four games on the trip, a battle with Angola, who fell to highly-ranked Spain by just nine points last Monday. The Lions pushed the Angolans throughout, but a 10-2 run to end the game made the final score 80-63.
Evan Payne finished with 15 points, four assists and four rebounds and was joined in double figures by Matt Hayes and David Humphries, who had 10 points each.
Angola jumped out to an early 25-15 lead thanks to hitting six of their eight three-pointers in the first quarter. They then stretched the lead to 15, 38-23 six minutes into the second quarter.
However, like they did the first game of the trip, the Lions fought back. They posted a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to trim the lead to 38-35 with just over a minute to play. Angola would lead 40-35 at the break. Angola would stretch the lead to double digits multiple times throughout the third and fourth quarter before the Lions trimmed it to eight, 67-59 on four straight points by Payne with six minutes left in the game. Angola would close the game on a 13-4 run to pull away late.
LMU heads to Barcelona where they will practice on Sunday before playing game three on Aug. 18 and game four on Aug. 20. Both games will be at La Zona Deportiva in Sant Cugat del Valles, a province of Barcelona.
