TORREJON, Madrid, Spain - Ask each member of the LMU men's basketball team why they are in Spain, and the one thing they will answer - it's all about team basketball. And on Thursday, the Lions continued to form more foundation to the program with their first game as a group.
Junior Marin Mornar, who is from Zagreb, Croatia, is one of eight international players. As the young roster continues its first months together, Mornar talked to the LMU Sports Network about playing a game in his seventh different country and using this trip to grow on new Head Coach Mike Dunlap's philosophies of living "big days" and forming a consistent game day routine.
And everything the first-year coach had been stressing to his young team seemed to come at them in the first game against a mixed roster from Spain's third division, Leb Silver.
Playing together for the first time, the Lions overcame two double-digit deficits, different rules within the international game, differences in how officials call games, a gym with no air conditioning, foul trouble and playing 5,000 miles from home to earn a 90-85 victory in overtime.
Watch the Highlights on LMU Sports Network:
"The biggest thing about this trip, and today especially, is it was our first time playing together as a group," said Dunlap. "It was the first time together. Everything was new. This was a good opportunity for this program to really come together. There were various pieces of adversity they had to face tonight. I was proud of how they worked together."
Senior Ayodeji Egbeyemi hit a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left to tie the game at 73-73 to send it to overtime. Egbeyemi then gave LMU its first lead of the game, 74-73, one minute into overtime. Sophomore Evan Payne, who scored 20 of his unofficial 25 points in the second half and played most of the fourth quarter with four fouls, scored five straight points to give LMU a 79-74 lead just under two minutes into overtime.
Leb Silver would come right back with six unanswered points to take the lead back, 80-79, with two minute to play. Newcomer David Humphries hit a pair of free throws and Petr Herman scored on a three-point play to give the Lions an 84-80 lead with a minute to play.
The host would cut the lead to one, 84-83, hitting their 13th three-pointer of the game. Payne and Humphries would ice it with four straight points, sending them to the win.
Humphries, who hit a trio of three-pointers in helping the Lions erase a 52-39 second half deficit, finished with 13 points as did the senior Egbeyemi. Herman finished with 12.
