EUGENE, Ore. Weston Strum became LMU track's first male All-American since the reinstatement of the program in 2006 Friday night, taking 10th in the 5,000m at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The senior, who is also the first Lion male to qualify for the NCAA Championships, lowered his personal, and LMU all-time, record with a 13:47.19 finish. The race not only had best two all-time time in NCAA meet history, but was also the first time that the top eight all finished under 13:40.
Strum's All-American status gives the Lion program two such honors in two days as fellow senior Sheree Shea closed out her career in LMU uniform Thursday night with a 13th place finish in the 10,000m. The duo join only Tara Erdmann in the LMU elite class of outdoor track All-Americans since 2006.
Strum's performance wrapped up the record-setting 2014 track season for the Lions which saw a pair of All-American finishes, a record six athletes advance to the NCAA West Preliminary (including two freshman) and 15 top-100 West Region marks set by eight athletes (at the conclusion of the regular season) - an increase from five athletes and eight marks in 2013.
Additionally, five program records were set including the men's 1,500m, men's and women's 5,000m and men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase.
