Post race interview with Weston Strum
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Weston Strum became the first member of the LMU men's track program to earn a bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships with his qualifying time in the 5,000m Saturday night at the NCAA West Preliminary on John McDonnell Track in Fayetteville, Ark.
The senior placed seventh in the second of two heats with a time of 13:52.00. The top five from each head automatically advance, along with the next best two times. Strum's mark was seventh best in the entire field, earning him a trip to Eugene, Ore.
Strum joins fellow senior Sheree Shea, who earned her first NCAA Championship berth with her 34:17.53, eighth-place finish in the 10,000m Thursday night. Shea and Strum represent the third and fourth Lions to advance to the NCAA Championships since the program's inception in 2006. They join one-time qualifier Laura Mickelson (2006) and three-time qualifier Tara Erdmann (2009-11).
Shea had a chance to double at the NCAA Championships, but came up just short in the 5k Saturday night, finishing sixth in her heat and 16th overall in 16:27.32. Junior Grace Graham-Zamudio (24th, 16:43.69), freshman Danielle Shanahan (40th, 17:14.56) and sophomore Kelli Sugimoto (42nd, 17:44.70) all all closed out their first NCAA appearances in the 5k Saturday.
On Friday night, Kyra Burke concluded her freshman collegiate season with a 10:53.24 finish in the 3,000m steeplechase, which made her 40th overall.
