FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Sheree Shea punched the LMU track team's first ticket to the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday night with her eighth place finish in the women's 10,000m run at the NCAA West Preliminary on John McDonnell Track in Fayetteville, Ark.
Shea becomes the third Lion to advance to the NCAA Championships since the program's inception in 2006. She joins one-time qualifier Laura Mickelson (2006) and three-time qualifier Tara Erdmann (2009-11).
In the final event of the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary, Shea cruised to a time of 34:17.53, just shy of her career-best (33:53.54) and season-best (33:55.73) but more than enough to put her in the advancing dozen. Iowa State's Katy Moen won the race in 34:02.98 while 12th place went to Rice's Cali Roper in 34:33.16.
Competing in her first-ever NCAA postseason event, LMU junior Grace Graham-Zamudio placed 14th in a career-best time of 34:51.43.
The Lion contingent continues racing on Friday, beginning with freshman Kyra Burke in the 3,000m steeplechase at 9:30 p.m. CST. LMU will wrap up competition Saturday when Weston Strum races in the 5k at 8:05 p.m. CST, followed by Shea, Graham-Zamudio, Danielle Shanahan and Kelli Sugimoto in the women's 5K at 8:45 p.m. CST.
