Pepperdine University captured the West Coast Conference regular season title, marking the second time in three seasons the Waves have finished atop the conference standings...the Waves finished a WCC-best 18-9 in conference play, and will be the top seed in this week's championship...Pepperdine will be joined in this year's field by Loyola Marymount University and Gonzaga University - both of whom finished 17-10 in West Coast Conference play...Conference bylaws were utilized to break the tie for seeding purposes, giving Loyola Marymount the 2-seed, and Gonzaga the 3-seed...Santa Clara makes its first trip to Stockton with a 16-11 slate, qualifying as the 4-seed...the Lions will open play on Thursday at 7 pm against #3 seed Gonzaga...LMU's game will follow #1 Pepperdine and #4 Santa Clara on Thursday, with that game scheduled for 3 pm...the tournament features a modified NCAA Regionals double-elimination format, with no "if necessary" championship game...the tournament's first five games will all be streamed live and available free of charge on TheW.tv, powered by Campus Insiders...Saturday's championship game will be played at 7:00 p.m. PDT, and will be televised live on ESPNU and via WatchESPN...the winner of the 2014 West Coast Conference Baseball Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament...

LMU took two-of-three from Pacific on the road to earn the #2 seed in the West Coast Conference Championship tournament last weekend...the Lions took the opener, 4-0, behind a complete-game shutout from junior Colin Welmon...locked in a tight game on Saturday, LMU scored once in the top of the ninth inning on a David Edwards RBI-single to break a 1-1 tie before handing the ball over to Bret Dahlson in the bottom half...Dahlson recorded his 10th save of the year to match the WCC career record for saves (28)...LMU was unable to record the sweep on Sunday, falling 6-2 to Pacific on Senior Day for the Tigers...
ALL-WCC HONORS
LMU freshmen Austin Miller and David Fletcher highlighted the All-West Coast Conference selections for the Lions, as Miller took home Freshman of the Year honors and Fletcher nabbed LMU's second consecutive Defensive Player of the Year...Miller and Fletcher, who were joined by freshman Ted Boeke on the All-Freshman team, also earned a spot on the first team All-WCC squad...LMU right-handers Bret Dahlson and Colin Welmon also earned a spot on the first team, while Boeke was named to the honorable mention squad...of the 25-member All-West Coast Conference first team, 10 are underclassmen and four are freshmen...LMU's four first-team selections are the most since tallying five in 2000...
Miller enjoyed a strong freshman campaign for the Lions, batting .373 with four doubles, a triple, and nine RBI while scoring 21 runs in WCC play...the center fielder shared the league lead in stolen bases with 11 in 14 attempts and posted a .449 on base percentage while starting all 27 WCC contests...overall, Miller has batted a team-high .378 with 44 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples and 18 RBI while swiping 25 bases in 29 attempts and reaching at a .465 clip...Miller, who has hit safely in 43 of LMU's 52 games this year (23 multi-hit games), is the first Lion named Freshman of the Year since Matt Lowenstein was selected in 2010...
Fletcher keeps the Defensive Player of the Year award at LMU after Colton Plaia took home the honor a year ago...Fletcher turned 21 double plays while making all 27 starts in WCC play...the highlight-reel shortstop also produced at the plate in WCC play, batting .343 with three doubles, a pair of triples and scored 15 runs...overall, he has batted .325 with 35 runs scored, six doubles, two triples and 27 RBI while hitting safely in 26 of LMU's last 28 games...
Welmon has been outstanding pitching on Friday nights for the third straight year...the right-hander has pitched to a 9-2 record and a 2.59 ERA over 13 starts and 97.1 innings this year...the native of Tustin, Calif. has tossed three complete games, including a pair in his final two West Coast Conference outings...included in the three complete games are two complete-game shutouts, both coming in WCC play...Welmon went 7-1 against conference foes during the 2014 regular season...
Dahlson, who will finish his career as LMU's all-time saves leader and will have at least a share of the WCC record for saves, has collected 10 in his senior campaign while pitching to a 1.91 ERA...Nine of his 10 saves this year came in WCC play, helping to guide LMU to the 2014 WCC Championship Tournament...entering the tournament, Dahlson has registered 28 career saves...
Boeke began the year splitting time at third base, but became LMU's everyday third baseman down the stretch and through West Coast Conference play, starting 20 of LMU's 27 WCC contests...in WCC play, Boeke hit .364 (second only to Miller) with 10 runs scored, three doubles, two triples and seven RBI...for the entire year, the native of La Crescenta, Calif. batted .308 over 31 starts...
San Diego's Connor Joe took home Player of the Year, becoming the sixth San Diego student-athlete to capture West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors since 2007...Joe hit .378 with 12 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBI during league play...the junior turned in a .667 slugging percentage, a .481 on base percentage and batted .750 with bases loaded and .372 with runners aboard...Joe struck out just 12 times in 111 league plate appearances and earned 18 walks...overall, Joe batted .367 with 21 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and led the WCC in RBI (51)...
Aaron Brown turned in a career season for Pepperdine as a junior en route to WCC Pitcher of the Year...the two-way star posted a sparkling 7-1 record with a 1.86 ERA...opposing hitters managed a .219 batting average...in 63.0 innings, Brown allowed 13 earned runs and struck out 58 while walking 23...Brown is the first Wave honored as Pitcher of the Year since Barry Enright was tabbed in 2006...
Steve Rodriguez earns his second Coach of the Year honor in the last three seasons after guiding Pepperdine to its second regular season championship since 2012 this season...the Waves posted an 18-9 conference slate (36-16 overall) and entered the final week of the regular season ranked in the top-25...the Waves posted a league-best 2.58 team ERA and opposing batters hit just .235...three Pepperdine pitchers - Brown, senior lefthander Corey Miller and senior right-hander Eric Karch - made the initial National Pitcher of the Year Watch List...
WELL DONE WELMON
Junior Colin Welmon has earned a pair of WCC Pitcher of the Week selections this year...most recently, the right-hander took home the award on May 19 for his stellar outing against Pacific...Welmon tossed his second complete-game shutout of the year, and the third of his career, on Friday night at Pacific, guiding LMU to a 4-0 victory over the Tigers at Klein Family Field...in his start against the Tigers, the native of Tustin, Calif. allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four over the nine shutout frames...he needed just 99 pitches to complete the game, and he faced just one over the minimum the rest of the way after allowing a leadoff double in the third...with the victory, Welmon improved to 9-2 on the year, and 7-1 in the WCC...his first selection came on March 24 after another dominating performance against then-No. 17 San Diego...Welmon guided LMU to a 7-0 shutout victory over #17 San Diego on March 21 to start a three-game WCC series with the Toreros...the right-hander earned the victory and improved to 4-1 after tossing eight scoreless innings, scattering seven hits while striking out three against the WCC's top offense...he did not walk a batter over the eight frames, as LMU shut out USD for the first time this year...the weekly selection was Welmon's first of 2014, and his second of his career (May 14, 2012)...the Tustin, Calif. native's 2012 WCC Pitcher of the Week selection also came after his start against San Diego...in three career starts against USD, Welmon has allowed just one run over 25 innings, tossing a complete-game as a freshman and eight shutout in each of the last two years...he has pitched to a 3-0 record with a .36 ERA, striking out 18 and allowing just two extra-base hits and one walk while combining on a pair of shutouts...
SAVING THE DAY
Senior Bret Dahlson recorded his fifth save of the season on April 6 against San Francisco to run his career total then to 23, setting the new LMU program record and passing Darryl Scott (1987-90) for the record...the right-hander has now collected 10 this year to push his career total to 28 - matching the WCC record for saves shared by Steve Kleen (Pepperdine - 2002-05) and A.J. Griffin (USD - 2007-10)...Dahlson registered 11 saves in 2012 and seven in 2013...the 11 saves were good for second in LMU's single-season record book...for his efforts, Dahlson was one of 50 players named to the mid-season watch list for the 10th annual Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball...nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts...at the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 4, prior to start of NCAA Super Regional tournament competition...the NCBWA's All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced during the 2014 College World Series...
FINISH WHAT YOU START
Junior Colin Welmon has registered three career complete-game shutouts, including two this year, and five career complete games...most recently, Welmon went the distance in shutting out Pacific on 5/16 (9.0 IP | 5 H | 4 K)...the complete-game was his third of the year, including his second in as many starts...he tossed his first complete-game shutout of the year (second of his career) on April 17 at BYU, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out three in going the distance...the right-hander needed 117 pitches to record the CG, guiding LMU to a 2-0 victory over BYU at BYU's Miller Park...his first career complete-game shutout came against Hawaii on February 28 of last year (9.0 IP | 2 H | 6 K)...Welmon's other two complete games are against Pepperdine on 5/2/14 (9.0 IP | 6 H | 2 ER | BB | 5 K) and San Diego on 5/11/12 (9.0 IP | 5 H | ER | 6 K) ...
WELLS FARGO PCH CUP
With both teams playing in the WCC Championship Tournament, it is very possible for LMU and Pepperdine to square-off again in a PCH Cup contest this week...separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup...the series, which is in its fifth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference...any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur...for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships...the Waves currently lead the Lions this year, 9.5-8.5...Pepperdine has won the challenge in each of the first four seasons...to learn more about the PCH Cup and view the current scorecard, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/6n4l82s
WALK IT OFF!
LMU has recorded two walk-off victories this year...junior Jimmy Jack collected the latest game-winner on March 16 against Portland when he posted an RBI-double with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to score David Edwards and hand LMU the 8-7 walk-off victory...Tanner Donnels had LMU's first walk-off the year, singling in the bottom of the 13th to hand LMU a 12-11 walk-off victory over Cal State Northridge on March 5...LMU did not record a walk-off victory in 2013...
JIMMY WITH THE JACK
Junior Jimmy Jack, who has a perfect baseball name for a power hitter, got the Lions on the board in terms of home runs on March 2 against Utah, connecting on a homer in the third inning in LMU's 322nd at bat of the year...LMU has now hit 10 home runs, including four from Jack (two pinch-hit homers), two from David Edwards (HR in consecutive games on 4/8 and 4/11), and one apiece from Tanner Donnels, Tommy Cheek, Brice Savage and Kevin Garcia...the 2013 LMU baseball squad managed its first home run of the year in its 1,469th at bat of the season when Colton Plaia hit a homer to left centerfield against BYU on May 2...LMU was the last Division I baseball team to hit a home run in 2013...the Lions finished 2013 with four home runs...prior to last year, LMU's lowest home run total since 1968 was 12 home runs in 1971...
LATE INNINGS HURT THE LIONS EARLY
Prior to LMU's seven-game win streak from 3/1 - 3/9, LMU had lost six straight games...that streak didn't exactly tell the entire story, as the Lions were tied or leading in each of the games over the streak headed into the sixth inning...LMU was outscored 31-4 in the sixth inning or later over that six-game losing streak, as the bullpen registered a 9.53 ERA...looking at the entire year, LMU has only trailed entering the sixth inning in 15 of its games this season...

THE YOUTH MOVEMENT
LMU brought in one of the best recruiting classes in the nation this year, and sixth-year head coach Jason Gill wasted no time penciling it into this everyday lineup card...the Lions have four freshmen players who have started at least half of LMU's games, including Austin Miller and David Fletcher who have started all 52...Ted Boeke has started 31, while Tyler Cohen has started 26...Cassidy Brown is just short of half at 24...Miller (.378) currently leads the team in terms of batting average...in an unofficial poll of NCAA Division I baseball sports information directors, only six schools have 5+ freshmen starting half of their games...George Washington and Austin Peay are starting seven, while Rhode Island is starting six...Tulane, Georgia Tech and Auburn are starting five, while seven schools (including LMU) are starting four...LMU started a season-high six freshmen on 2/25 at UC Irvine (Fletcher - SS; Miller - CF; Cohen - 3B; Boeke - 1B; Brown - C; Hammond - LF)...the Lions have had seven freshmen on the field at once one time this year, as Tim Peabody took the mound in the fourth inning against UC Irvine with the starters behind him defensively...
LOTS OF HOME COOKING
In its 32nd season as the home of Lion baseball in 2014, George C. Page Stadium also began a new era of play this year - the first season played under the lights...the 2014 LMU baseball schedule featured 30 of its 52 games played at home...LMU went 20-10 at home this year, including 13-5 under the lights...the Lions did not play a non-conference road weekend series during the regular season this year, instead hosting Utah Valley, Northern Kentucky, and Oregon and Utah from the Pac-12 Conference...the Lions, who have posted a 517-384-4 (.573) overall record in the park's 31 seasons, have claimed five conference titles while calling Page Stadium home...the first Page Stadium conference title came in 1986, when the Lions posted a 24-8 record at home...the best record came in 1988, when LMU was 30-5 at home (.857)...
WE'RE GOING STREAKING!

GETTING AHEAD OF THE PAC
Boasting the last two NCAA Champions in UCLA and Arizona, the Pac-12 was a strong baseball conference that LMU saw quite a bit of in 2014...the Lions were scheduled to play 11 games against teams from the Pac-12, including three apiece against Oregon, UCLA and Utah...LMU finished the year 3-8 against the Pac-12...the Lions played 11 games against the Pac-12 last season, including the first seven of the year, finishing 4-7 overall...
MILLER TIME
Freshman Austin Miller was named WCC Player of the Week for the week ending on May 4, it was announced by the Conference office on Monday morning...Miller batted .643 (9-for-14) with two runs scored, two doubles, a pair of walks, three RBI and three stolen bases to guide LMU to a 3-1 week, including a series victory over first-place #17 Pepperdine in WCC play...the weekly selection is LMU's third of the 2014 season, as senior Tommy Cheek and junior Colin Welmon have also been tabbed Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively...the native of Greeley, Colo. began his week with a career-high 4-for-5 day with three RBI and a double against San Diego State on Tuesday...he opened the WCC series with Pepperdine by going 1-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and two stolen bases on Friday...Saturday saw him finish 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double and a stolen base, before his 1-for-3 day with a walk on Sunday...over the course of the four games, he reached at a .706 clip while slugging .786...
PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR CHEEK
Senior Tommy Cheek was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week ending on March 16...Cheek batted .500 (9-for-18) over the course of four games played, collecting four runs scored, four RBI and a pair of doubles to the tune of a .500 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage...for Cheek, the WCC Player of the Week honor is the second of his career (April 1, 2013)...the native of Escondido, Calif. collected multiple hits in all four games as LMU went 3-1, including posting a sweep of Portland to start WCC play...Cheek's biggest game came on 3/15, where he finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI...in the three games against Portland, Cheek batted .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, two doubles and four RBI...
ONE FOR THE AGES
LMU's 12-11 walk-off victory in 13 innings on March 5 over Cal State Northridge was a game for the ages...the contest lasted 5:40...LMU collected 24 hits, the most since collecting 24 against Saint Mary's on April 12, 2008...the walk-off victory was the first for the Lions since May 20, 2012 when they walked off on Pepperdine with a 4-3 victory...Tanner Donnels went 6-for-6 with the game-tying RBI single in the 11th and the game-winner in the bottom of the 13th...Donnels' six-hit game matched the LMU single-game record set by Travis Tarchione on April 15, 1987 against UNLV...the Lions also committed seven errors, tied for the most in a single game in LMU history (three other times | most recently 4/5/97 vs. Portland)...
DON'T GO WALKING OFF ON ME...AGAIN
The LMU baseball program suffered its first walk-off loss of the season on February 25 when UC Irvine scored once in the bottom of the 11th on a RBI-single from Evan Cassolato to claim a 3-2 victory...LMU has since recorded a walk-off of its own, beating Cal State Nothridge on March 5 with a single off the bat of Tanner Donnels in the 13th to earn a 12-11 victory...the Lions suffered four walk-off losses last year...the first walk-off loss of 2013 came on March 1 at UNLV...Oklahoma State walked-off on the Lions twice, bookending a series on March 8 and 10...Pepperdine completed the agony with a walk-off on March 17...last year there was one walk-off home run (3/8 at Oklahoma State - Tanner Krietemeier), a walk-off double (3/1 at UNLV - Justin Jones), and two walk-off singles (3/10 at Oklahoma State - Zach Fish; 3/17 at Pepperdine - Drew Hacker)...
PICKED BEFORE THE PITCH
Junior right-hander Colin Welmon was tabbed preseason All-WCC prior to the start of the 2014 campaign...serving as LMU's Friday starter, Welmon pitched to a 5-4 record and a team-best 2.30 ERA with 64 strikeouts over 12 starts and 78.1 innings of work...Welmon held opponents to a .223 average against while posting one complete game and having his hand in a pair of shutouts...the Tustin, Calif. native went 3-2 with a 3.20 ERA over seven starts against WCC teams...
SURVEY SAYS
The LMU baseball team, led by sixth-year head coach Jason Gill, was picked to finish fourth in the competitive West Coast Conference based on a poll of the 10 conference head coaches...San Diego, which received six of the 10 first-place votes, topped the conference poll for the seventh straight year, earning 76 points...three other teams also received at least one first-place vote, with San Francisco claiming two, and Pepperdine and BYU earning one apiece...the Waves were a slight favorite to claim second, taking home 68 points, followed by San Francisco (66) and the Lions...

Junior Tanner Donnels, redshirt junior Kevin Glomb and freshman Tim Peabody all have family ties to LMU, as Donnels' father, Chris, played baseball at LMU and was part of LMU's 1986 World Series team before being selected in the first round of the 1987 draft by the New York Mets and embarking on a eight-year MLB career...Chris Donnels is LMU's all-time leader in slugging percentage (.650), home runs (45) and RBI (225), setting the LMU single-season records for home runs (21) and RBI (91) in 1986...Donnels' mother and grandfather also attended LMU...Glomb's brother, Michael, played baseball for LMU from 2004-08, while his sister played volleyball at LMU in 2005...Peabody's mother, Nadine, played softball at LMU, while his uncle, Tom, was a member of LMU's 1989-90 Elite Eight men's basketball team...

LMU baseball's group of newcomers was named 22nd-best by Baseball America and #34 in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball...LMU was just one of four non-BCS schools to make the Collegiate Baseball list, and just one of five private schools lauded...the recruiting class was the only school from the WCC named to Baseball America's list...recruiting coordinator Bryant Ward has now had two top-40 recruiting classes in the last three years...the class includes David Fletcher, the 2013 Division II CIF Player of the Year, Cassidy Brown, the 2013 Ohio Player of the Year, Tyler Cohen, a first-team All-CIF selection and the #46 prospect in California according to Baseball America, and Trent Hammond, a first team All-CIF selection and a Max Preps All-State honoree...

LMU has had two former baseball players in the Major Leagues in 2014, as C.J. Wilson (Los Angeles Angels) begins his 10th year on the game's biggest stage...Ryan Wheeler (Colorado) has also appeared this year...in addition to Wheeler, Eric Farris (Minnesota) also has MLB experience as he competes in Minor League Baseball to start the 2014 season...including Wheeler and Farris, eight former Lions are currently playing in the Minor Leagues...the Lions have had more than 115 players drafted by Major League Baseball teams in program history, including 25 players in the last 10 years...Billy Traber and Chris Donnels are the lone Lions to be selected in the first round, interestingly both selected by the Mets...Traber went 16th overall in 2000, while Donnels was taken with the 24th pick in 1987...including Traber and Donnels, LMU has had 20 players taken in the first five rounds of a MLB draft...LMU's best draft came in 2000, as a Lion was taken in each of the first three rounds - Traber went in the first, followed by Michael Schultz in the second, and Scott Walter in the third...for a list of current Lions playing in professional baseball, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/7taglqf
