Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - Junior Colin Welmon tossed his second complete-game shutout of the year, and the third of his career, on Friday night at Pacific, guiding LMU (29-21, 16-9 WCC) to a 4-0 victory over the Tigers (25-25, 14-11 WCC) at Klein Family Field. His first complete-game shutout of the year came at BYU on April 17. The complete game was his third of the year and the fifth of his career, including his second in as many starts after going the distance against Pepperdine on May 2.

The native of Tustin, Calif. allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four over the nine shutout frames. He needed just 99 pitches to complete the game, and he faced just one over the minimum the rest of the way after allowing a leadoff double in the third. With the victory, Welmon improved to 9-2 on the year.

LMU scored all four of its runs in the fourth inning, benefitting from four hits and an error. Cole Trezek got the inning going with a hit-by-pitch from Pacific starter Mike Hager. Hager, who was tagged with the loss and fell to 4-5, then got the first out on a sacrifice bunt from Tommy Cheek. David Edwards drove in the first and game-winning run with a double inside the bag at third base before coming around to score on a throwing error charged to Erik Lockwood at first base on a ground ball off the bat of Jimmy Jack. Jack, now at second after the error, scored on a triple from Ted Boeke. Boeke fell a homer shy of the cycle after going 4-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Fellow freshman Austin Miller capped the scoring run and plated Boeke on the ensuing play, shooting a single into left-centerfield to chase Hager.

Michael Benson was impressive in relief for Pacific, tossing the final 5.1 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits, but Welmon proved sharp all night en route to locking up the victory.

LMU will continue the three-game series with Pacific tomorrow at 2 pm.
