Box Score

PROVO, Utah - The LMU baseball team (24-16, 12-6 WCC) dropped a three-game West Coast Conference series to BYU (16-25, 7-11 WCC) on Saturday, falling in a decisive game three by a score of 4-2. LMU was held hitless over the first five innings, but managed to stay close and tie the game at one in the sixth. Unfortunately, BYU came alive for three runs in the home half of the sixth en route to claiming the victory.

Senior Kevin Garcia broke up the no-hit bid from sophomore Kolton Mahoney in the sixth, belting a double down the left field line before coming around to score on an RBI-triple from David Fletcher. Mahoney finished the game having tossed 7.2 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three. The right-hander improved to 5-5 with the victory. Brandon Kinser entered with two out and the tying runs in scoring position in the eighth inning, promptly striking out Cole Trezek before tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his fourth save of the year.

Tied at one run apiece, LMU elected to call to its bullpen after freshman J.D. Busfield went the first 5.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out two. Brandon Horth was the first Lion used out of the pen, allowing a one-out walk and a single before being replaced by senior Carlos Fuentes. Fuentes surrendered back-to-back RBI-singles to Bret Lopez and Jarrett Jarvis before Lopez came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Hayden Nielsen. Horth, who was charged with two runs, was saddled with the loss and fell to 1-3 on the year.

LMU will look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday when it travels to UCLA for a game at 6 pm.
