Box Score

Junior Colin Welmon tossed his second career complete-game shutout on Thursday at BYU, allowing just six hits and two walks while striking out three in going the distance. The right-hander needed 117 pitches to record his third career complete game, guiding LMU (24-14, 12-4 WCC) to a 2-0 victory over BYU (14-25, 5-11 WCC) at BYU'S Miller Park. His first career complete-game shutout came against Hawaii on February 28 of last year. With the victory, LMU has now won seven straight games.

Welmon worked around a few jams on Thursday night, allowing the leadoff hitter to reach in the first, second, eighth and ninth. He retired 13 straight from the end of the second through one out in the sixth en route to improving to 6-2 with the victory.

LMU scored its lone runs in the sixth inning, as Jimmy Jack, who went 2-for-3, doubled-home David Edwards before coming around to score on a bloop single from Ted Boeke. Boeke's 2-for-4 night extended his hitting streak to five games. Edwards had reached on a one-out hit-by-pitch earlier in the frame. The Lions had a number of opportunities on Thursday night, but right-hander Desmond Poulson did well to pitch around the jams as well, leaving LMU with 10 runners left on base for the game. Poulson took the loss after tossing 6.1 innings and allowing eight hits, falling to 4-5 on the year.

David Fletcher and Edwards also extended hitting streaks in the victory, with Fletcher going 1-for-4 to run his streak to 10 games. Edwards has now hit safely in seven games after going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Welmon got out of the eighth-inning jam by way of a 6-4-3 double play. CJ Latham led off with a single before Welmon struck out Brennon Lund and got the twin-killing from Eric Urry. Looking to finish what he started against the heart of the order in the ninth, Welmon walked Dillon Robinson before getting Brock Whitney to line out to shortstop. A single from Kelton Caldwell followed as BYU got the tying run aboard, but Jarett Jarvis lined out to Edwards at second in front of a fly ball to right field to end the threat and the game.

LMU will look to take the series over BYU tomorrow at 5 pm. Junior Sean Buckle will be on the mound for the Lions.
