Box Score

The LMU baseball team (4-7) took a three-game series over Utah (5-5) by way of a 4-1 victory in game three on Sunday at LMU's Page Stadium. The Lions dropped the opener on Saturday afternoon, but rebounded to take the final two games of the series.

Junior Brandon Horth got the start for LMU and tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits before giving way to the bullpen. LMU used a total of five pitchers, with the bullpen combining for six shutout frames. Freshman Tim Peabody hurled the fourth and fifth innings, improving to 1-0 after being credited with the victory. Carlos Fuentes took over for the next two frames, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Senior Bret Dahlson was impressive in the eighth, needing just nine pitches to put the Utes down in order, including striking out one. Freshman Tyler Cohen finished the game on the hill and earned his second save, striking out one.

Utah got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Kody Davis led things off with a double inside the bag at third and into the left field corner. A wild pitch and a walk pushed runners to the corners, but LMU avoided the big inning by trading a run for two outs by way of a 5-4-3 double play.

Trailing 1-0 headed into the third, LMU got back to even on one swing of the bat from Jimmy Jack. Jack, who finished 1-for-3, belted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-centerfield for his and the Lions' first homer of the year.

Cole Trezek came up a clutch two-out hit in the fourth inning, driving in a pair with a double into left field to put LMU on top, 3-1. Tommy Cheek got things rolling with a double before David Edwards reached with a two-out hit-by-pitch. Trezek made the free pass costly when he belted the first pitch of his at bat off the base of the wall in left field to bring home both runners.

LMU collected an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Edwards shot an RBI-single into centerfield to bring home Tanner Donnels. Donnels had started the inning with a single into left field before moving to second on a bunt from Kevin Garcia.

LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to UCLA for a game at 6 PM.
