SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Senior Tommy Cheek was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week ending on March 16, it was announced by the Conference office on Monday morning. Cheek, who batted .600 with six runs scored and eight RBI two weeks ago, continued his hot-hitting last week. The native of Escondido, Calif. batted .500 (9-for-18) over the course of four games played, collecting four runs scored, four RBI and a pair of doubles to the tune of a .500 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage. For Cheek, the WCC Player of the Week honor is the second of his career (April 1, 2013). The selection is LMU's first of the 2014 season.
LMU's starting first baseman collected multiple hits in all four games as LMU went 3-1, including posting a sweep of Portland to start WCC play. Cheek's biggest game came on Saturday night, where he finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. In the three games against Portland, Cheek batted .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, two doubles and four RBI.
Cheek has now hit safely in five straight games, batting .565 with six runs scored and six RBI over the span. He has also collected a hit in 10 of his last 11 games played, including multiple hits in seven over the span.
Cheek and the Lions will return to action on Tuesday when they host Long Beach State at 6 pm. The Lions will then travel to preseason WCC-favorite San Diego this weekend for a three-game WCC series.
