Los Angeles, Calif. - The LMU men's tennis team continued its strong start to the season Saturday when they defeated Northern Arizona 7-0 at the LMU Tennis Center. The win improves LMU's record to 4-2 while the Lumberjacks fall to 3-4.
The Lions got off to a fast start in doubles, winning the first two matches to quickly secure the doubles point. LMU started the same doubles teams on the top two courts as they have all year, and it paid off once again. On Court 1, Todd Volmari and Sebastian Bustamante defeated their opponents 8-2 to advance to 4-1 as a team this season. On Court 2, Felix Van Kann and Cristobal Rivera also won 8-2 to remain undefeated as a pair at 5-0 in 2014. This was enough to give the doubles point to the Lions, meaning the match on Court 3 would go unfinished.
In singles play, LMU was strong through the entire lineup, getting wins on all six courts. First to finish was Todd Volmari, who won 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3. The junior from Canberra, Australia is undefeated in singles play this season, now 4-0 on Courts 3 and 4. Next to finish was Rivera on Court 4, where he won 7-5, 6-2 over his opponent to improve to 4-2 on the year for singles play. The match-clinching win came on Court 5 shortly after, where Bustamante would win 6-3, 6-3, giving the Lions their fourth point. On Court 2, Van Kann gave another impressive performance with a 6-4, 7-5 over his competitor. The junior from Franfurt, Germany has moved up to Court 2 for singles this season, where he now has four wins under his belt. On the top court, Doehring showed his dominance to the fans at the LMU Tennis Center again. The transfer from BYU earned his third win on Court 1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win on Saturday. Rounding out things for the Lions was freshman Luke Bohuslav, making the first singles start of his college career and getting the big 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 6.
LMU will get a week off from matches before returning to play on March 5 when they host the College of Charleston at 2:00p.m.
