2014 Beach Tennis Tournament Draws
The LMU women's tennis team will continue the fall season this weekend when Ellie Grossman, Lisa Piller, Kylie Waschuk and Anna Romeka head to Long Beach State for the Beach Tournament beginning on Friday. The tournament will be the first action of Romeka and Waschuk's careers as Lions.
The three-day tournament will be held at Long Beach State's Rhodes Tennis Center, with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday. In addition to LMU, UCLA, host Long Beach State, Montana, Portland State, Grand Canyon, Air Force, CSUN, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside and UC Irvine will send players to the tournament.
The participants are split into four singles and two doubles flights, with each flight starting at the Round of 16. Friday will feature a mix of singles and doubles throughout the day, while Saturday will start with doubles at 9 a.m. and then feature singles competition the rest of the day. Sunday will again feature a mix with the finals of the singles matches being played out.
Grossman went 12-7, including 7-3 in WCC play, during singles play last year. She recorded a 3-1 record at #5 singles and a 9-6 mark at #6. The native of Eugene, Ore. competed primarily with Lauri Mueller during doubles play, finishing 4-12 with Mueller and 5-13 overall as a doubles player. Grossman will open play in singles flight 1 with a match against Alexis Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton.
Piller went 1-2 as a singles player during her junior year, with the victory coming over Kristin Lampe of Concordia in her first match played. Piller will meet Karolina Rozenberg of Long Beach State in the first round of the third singles flight, and will team with Grossman in the first doubles flight. The pair will open doubles play with a contest against Sulz/Kinkaid of Montana.
Waschuk entered LMU ranked in the top-12 amongst Canadian junior girls for the 2014 graduating class, and earned a #37 Canadian junior rank on January 3, 2014. She advanced to the round of 16 at both 2013 U18 Canadian Nationals, eventually taking losses to the top-seeded player in both championships. As a high school player, she participated in 11 Canadian Junior National Championships from 2008-13, including twice earning a seed in the tournament. Waschuk draws Natasha Rizvi of Air Force in the opening round of the singles flight 2.
Romeka will play against Scout Shutter of Cal State Northridge in her first collegiate singles match, while also teaming with Waschuk in the second doubles flight. The duo will face Magday/Landram of Air Force in the first round.
The fall season began last weekend for LMU when Jessica Perez, Andrea Crespo and Mueller all reached the singles finals at the San Diego State Fall Classic.
