CURRENT CUP STANDINGS
Saturday's women's basketball match-up between the Lions and Waves is the seventh Cup battle of the 2013-14 season. In this fifth year of the battle between the two schools for the Wells Fargo PCH Cup, the Lions enter this meeting with a 5-2.5 point lead. Points throughout the year are awarded as follows: 1 point for a home victory, 1.5 points for a road victory, 1 point for a neutral site victory, .5 point for a tie.
INSIDE THE LIONS
Freshman Leslie Lopez-Wood poured in a career-high 18 points on Jan. 2 versus San Francisco, becoming the sixth different Lion to lead the scoring column this season. The sharp shooter scored all 18 points from beyond the arc, nailing 6-of-11 from three. Her sixth treys is one off the school record (7), held by three different players and last achieved by Monica DeAngelis in 2011.
Hazel Ramirez played in her 100th career game on Thursday, Dec. 28 at BYU. The senior point guard has started all but four of games and has appeared in all but two games contested during her career. The two missed games were due to an ankle injury last season.
Ramirez has scored in double-figures in 12 of LMU's 15 games this season, leading the team in scoring seven times. She tallied her first 20-plus point game of the year with a 22-point effort at Long Beach State on Nov. 23 and surpassed the mark a second time with 24 points at San Diego on Dec. 30. That was just one shy of her career high of 25 set last season at USD.
Six different players have led the scoring column in a game, including Ramirez, Emily Ben-Jumbo, Deanna Johnson, Chelsea Barnes, Sophie Taylor and, most recently, Leslie Lopez-Wood. Barnes' team-high 16 points versus Oregon State on Nov. 21 also matched her career high, set at Wyoming on Dec. 29, 2012. Taylor also achieved a career-high with 16 points, all in the second half, against UC Irvine on Nov. 29. Johnson's 23-point effort on Saturday versus UNLV was one shy of her career high set on Feb. 28, 2013 vs. BYU.
With 72 assists through 15 games, Hazel Ramirez brings her career total to 358, good for third place in LMU's all-time record book. Next in line is Kristen Bruich (1988-91) with 429.
The Lions have debuted seven different starting lineups in 14 games played this season. Two constants have remained, however, as senior point guard Hazel Ramirez and junior forward Emily Ben-Jumbo have started all 14 games.
ABOUT THE PEPPERDINE WAVES
Pepperdine enters the week with a 5-10 overall record and 1-3 mark in West Coast Conference play. The Waves split a pair of WCC games at home last week, earning a 100-93 double overtime thriller over Santa Clara on Thursday before falling, 77-61, to San Francisco on Saturday. Bria Richardson scored a career-high 44 points in the win, earning WCC Player of the Week honors. Richardson leads the Waves with a 17.7 ppg average. She is joined in double-figures by Keitra Wallace (13 ppg), Allie Green (12.2 ppg) and Ea Shoushtari (11.1 ppg). The Waves average just over 70 ppg and shoot at a nearly 41 percent clip from the field. They have been outrebounded by a slight 3.4 average while turning the ball over just 15.1 times per game.
