Los Angeles, Calif. -- In their first match of the 2014 spring season, the LMU women's tennis team came out ready to go Saturday at home. Hosting Concordia University on the new blue courts of the LMU Tennis Center, the Lions pounded the Eagles 7-0 to start off the year.
LMU is the only NCAA Division I school on Concordia's schedule, tilting the matchup in favor of the home team. The Lions showed their overwhelming power early when they swept the doubles point, winning all three matches. Senior Miya Jin was partnered with freshman Jessica Perez on Court 1, where they cruised to an 8-1 win. Sophomore Kristine Kouyoumjian was paired with freshman Laura Mueller on Court 2, where they also won 8-1. Two Lion newcomers Ellie Grossman and Julia Norlin played together on Court 3 and came away with an 8-0 sweep.
The story in singles play was much of the same, with LMU dominating on all six courts. Mueller, who came into the season ranked No. 97 by the ITA for singles, shined in her first spring match as a Lion. The Germany native won 6-0, 6-0 on Court 4. Kouyoumjian and Perez got double bagel 6-0, 6-0 wins as well on Courts 2 and 3, respectively. Senior Reka Rohonyi did the same on Court 5. Junior Lisa Piller won 6-1, 6-2 on Court 6 and Jin defeated her opponent on Court 1 by a tally of 6-1, 6-2.
The six singles wins gave LMU the 7-0 victory and a bit of confidence and momentum to start the season. They will travel to UCLA on Wednesday for their next match before returning home to the LMU Tennis Center for two matches next weekend.
