IRVINE, Calif. -- A pair of Lions made it out of the first round of the Pro Futures tournament hosted by the Racquet Club of Irvine. Junior Daniel Simko and sophomore Todd Volmari won their first-round matchups before falling in the second round.
The tournament had a strong Australian theme for the Lions. Simko, a native of Geelong, Australia defeated fellow Australian Justin Seller 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. Volmari, who hails from Canberra, Australia, defeated American JC Aragone, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 in the same round.
Volmari fell to American Charles Boyce in the second round, 6-0, 6-3. Australia Joshua Banks defeated Simko, 6-3, 6-3.
Next up for the Lions is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa. The pre-qualifying round begins Saturday, Sept. 29.
