OKLAHOMA CITY - The USA Softball National Women's Team earned a 3-0 victory over Australia in the championship game of the World Cup of Softball Monday night, concluding tournament play with a perfect 6-0 record.
LMU alum Sam Fischer went 2-for-3 in the game, including driving in the game-winning runs with a two-out, two-RBI double in the first inning. Team USA added an unearned run in the fifth for the final 3-0 spread.
Fischer appeared in four of Team USA's six games throughout the tournament, going a combined 6-for-11 (.545) with two doubles, one home run and six RBIs. She had an RBI-single in USA's 8-0, tournament-opening game against Puerto Rico, then blasted a three-RBI home run in a 9-0 win over Canada. She tallied a pair of hits in the USA's 2-1 win over the Netherlands, before finishing with a second straight 2-for-3 showing in the title game Monday.
Next up for Team USA is the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada July 4-9. The squad then heads to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada July 13-22 for the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship.
