LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU swimming team honored its graduating seniors on Saturday prior to a centennial swimming meet against UC San Diego at Burns Aquatics Center. The Lions fell by a count of 167-94. UC San Diego's men's team was also in action, defeating Cal State Bakersfield, 165-97.
The Lions earned four victories on Saturday, including a pair of individual wins from Kjirsten Magnuson and wins in each of the two relays.
The meet began well for the Lions, as the team of Sophie Allen, Camille Hopp, Magnuson and Jill Dahle combined to narrowly out-touch UC San Diego with a time of 1:47.59. The Tritons finished second at 1:47.65.
UCSD turned in a stellar performance in the 1000 freestyle event, claiming each of the first three spots in the race. Bethany Dong claimed first in 10:41.41, followed by Jessica Norgard (10:38.81) and Megan Lee (10:55.09). Mary Kate Short was the first to finish for LMU, touching the wall in 10:54.67. Senior Terry Rinder followed shortly thereafter in 10:56.06.
LMU managed to place three swimmers in the top-four of the 200 freestyle, but UCSD's Anji Shakya won the event in 1:54.10. Dahle placed second in her final home meet of her career, stopping the clock at 1:55.29. Christina Cannata and Diana Safa rounded out the finishers for the Lions.
The Tritons' Alex Henley proved too much in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in 57.48. LMU's Sophie Allen took second in 59.19, followed by UCSD's Sandy Hon and LMU's Noe Vargas.
UCSD continued its strong swimming in the ninth event of the day, putting three more swimmers in the top-four of the 100 breaststroke. Emily Adamczyk turned in a time of 1:05.51 to earn top honors, followed by LMU's Camille Hopp at 1:06.34.
Gabby Rossbach and Olivia Martens went 1-2 in the 200 butterfly for UCSD, as Rossbach touched the wall in 2:07.78 in front of Martens at 2:09.97. LMU's Angelina Prat claimed third at 2:11.34.
LMU gained some ground in the 50 freestyle event, earning the top-two spots in the race, including a first-place finish by Magnuson in 23.98. Hopp finished second in 24.36. Magnuson was back at it again in the 100 freestyle, defeating all opponents with a time of 53.05. Jaclyn Amog was a close second at 53.69 for the Tritons.
Vargas finished in second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.10, but Henley and UCSD reclaimed a spot atop the finishers with a time of 2:04.82. Katie Rick was the top finisher for LMU in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:28.32, good enough for third in the race. Adamczyk won her second race of the day, turning in a time of 2:19.45.
In her final individual competitive swim in Burns Aquatics Center, Dahle earned second place behind Shakya in the 500 freestyle. Dahle touched the wall in 5:12.36 behind Shakya at 5:08.06. The Tritons also managed to claim third and fourth in the race, earning more valuable points toward their total.
Amog and Adamczyk continued their solid day in the pool in the 100 butterfly, finishing 1-2 with times of 57.15 and 58.56, respectively. Yvonne Le, also a senior, finished third with a time of 1:00.32.
UCSD dominated the 200 individual medley, earning first through third place, led by Henley's 2:09.57. Summer Bennett and Eva Chen finished second and third before LMU's Cannata earned fourth with a time of 2:14.42.
LMU finished the day strong, earning another relay victory behind the team of Magnuson, Hopp, Allen and Dahle. The quartet teamed for a time of 3:33.42, edging UCSD's top relay at 3:34.22.
The Lions will return to action on January 20 when they travel to San Diego, Calif. to compete against San Diego, Pepperdine and Fresno State at the Beach Cup.
