LAS VEGAS - Tawni Martino scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season, but UNLV snapped a tie eight minutes into overtime and the LMU women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Rebels in its final game before opening WCC play next week.
The Lions fell to 6-4-1, having dropped their last three games. UNLV moved to 5-7-2 on the season.
With the temperature hovering in the low 90s at kick off, the teams played a fairly balanced first half. LMU had eight shots in the opening period, two on goal, while UNLV took seven shots, one on goal.
The scoreless drought ended in the 52nd minute as the teams scored less than 30 seconds apart. UNLV's Jenna Howerton collected the ball following a miscleared free kick and sent a shot into the high post net. Macy Jo Harrison was credited with an assist on the play.
Twenty-six seconds later, LMU countered with a goal of its own as Martino took a pass from Linda Bakker inside the box and placed a shot out of the reach of UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell.
The goal was Martino's 12th career strike, moving the sophomore into the 10th position in LMU's record book for career goals.
Howerton broke the tie at the 98:08 mark, scoring for the second time in the game, and third time on the season. Taking a pass from Jenn Wolfe, Howerton was able to slip a shot into the lower corner of the net, out of the reach of LMU goalkeeper Brittney Jagger.
Each team finished with 15 shots, including five each on goal. Martino led the with six shots while Jagger made three saves for the Lions.
LMU opens WCC play at San Francisco on Friday. The Lions then return to Sullivan Field Sunday at 1 p.m. to host Gonzaga.
