SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The LMU volleyball team (10-9, 3-3) hit just .048 en route to being swept by San Francisco (13-6, 5-1) by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 on Thursday night in San Francisco's War Memorial Gym. The Lions did manage to hold USF to a low hitting percentage at .196, but the Dons never trailed in the match.
Senior Jasmine Rankins had seven kills on 31 attacks, while freshmen Litara Keil and Caitlin DeWitt each had five kills. The duo also showed well on the block, as Keil finished with five block assists to DeWitt's four. Olivia Bailey, who entered the match averaging 9.84 assists per set, finished the match with 17. Sophomore libero Betsi Metter finished with double-digit digs, collecting a team-best 13.
No Don player reached double-digit kills, but Malina Terrell finished with nine on 13 swings for a blistering .692 percentage. The Dons managed six service aces, guided by three from Joan Caloiaro. The setter also paced all players in assists, dishing-out 29 over the three sets, and teaming that mark with 10 digs for a double-double.
LMU hit .053 in the opening frame, as Alyse Hensley led the squad with three kills on eight attacks. Rankins had a pair of kills and also served-up an ace. Jocelyn Levig led all players with four kills, while Terrell got off to a hot start with three kills on as many attacks as the Dons took the period by a count of 25-19.
The Lions improved their hitting percentage slightly in the second, connecting at a .057 clip, including three kills from Rankins. DeWitt recorded her lone service ace of the match in the second, but USF utilized its best hitting percentage with a .270 mark. Vendula Strakova contributed three kills, while a trio of other Dons managed two apiece. After serving-up a pair of aces in the first, USF notched three more en route to improving the match score to 2-0 with a 25-15 decision.
Both teams hit for their lowest hitting percentages in the third, but it was USF's .146 clip that proved enough to earn a sweep of the Lions. Valentina Zaloznik had five of her six match kills in the third, while Terrell connected for four kills on five swings. The Don block, which accounted for four team blocks in each of the first two sets, fell to just one in the third, but LMU hit just .031 in the period. Keil closed the final period with three kills and four block assists as the Lions proved strong on the block with six team stuffs in the closing set. Despite the push from the LMU blocking corps, USF earned a 25-19 victory in the third to take the match.
LMU returns to action on Saturday when it travels to No. 17 San Diego for a match at 1 p.m.
