LONG BEACH, Calif. – Loyola Marymount University women's volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to Long Beach State on Sunday afternoon at LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid, falling by set scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-19. The Lions are now 7-2 on the season.
LMU finished with 30 kills and hit .161 as a team, while Long Beach State recorded 42 kills and hit .282 in the straight-set victory.
Set One | Long Beach State 25, LMU 18
The Lions matched Long Beach State point-for-point through the early stages of the opening frame. Kills from Nicole Schuetz and Maria Tabacuks, combined with a Beach attack error, tied the set at 4-4.
Long Beach State responded with a run fueled by kills from Reagan Hope and Kendal Murphy along with an Izzy Mahaffey service ace to take control. The Beach extended its advantage to 20-12 behind a balanced attack before late kills from Aleksandra Stojanovic, Ayanna Henry, and Tabacuks helped LMU cut into the deficit. Long Beach State ultimately secured the set, 25-18.
Set Two | Long Beach State 25, LMU 17
Long Beach State opened the second set with the first four points, but the Lions answered to pull within one at 6-5 following a Tabacuks kill and a Beach attack error.
After LMU stayed within striking distance at 10-8, Long Beach State used a key five-point run, highlighted by two Laurel Barsocchini service aces, to create separation. The Lions got kills from Zaria Thornton, Schuetz, and Tabacuks and later got a block from Stojanovic and Henry to narrow the margin to 21-16, but the Beach closed out the set to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set Three | Long Beach State 25, LMU 19
The Lions erased an early deficit and took a brief 3-2 lead following a Gabriella Cascione service ace. The teams battled evenly through much of the set, with Tabacuks helping LMU stay level at 16-16.
Long Beach State broke the tie with a late run and stretched its advantage to 23-18 behind kills from Sidney Hamaker and Chloe Johnson. Tabacuks delivered another kill for the Lions, but the Beach scored the final two points to complete the sweep.
LMU Leaders
Schuh finished with 23 assists, nine digs, one kill, and one block. Tabacuks posted 14 kills, eight digs, three blocks, and a team-high 15.5 points. Schuetz added nine kills, while Stojanovic recorded four blocks and two kills.
