SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The LMU swimming team defeated UC San Diego, 132-130, on Saturday at UCSD's Canyonview Pool. The Lions dropped the first two events, but rebounded to earn victories in five of the next six overall to keep within striking distance of the Tritons. After three more UCSD first-place finishes, LMU won two of the final three events, including the 400 freestyle relay to even the tally at 130-130. The LMU `B' relay took third in the race, earning the final two points of the meet to hand LMU the slim margin of victory. Senior Isabella Zhang paced the Lions on Saturday, earning three individual victories (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) and one relay victory (400 freestyle).
San Diego`s `A' relay of Sandy Hon, Michelle McCadden, Jessica Ferguson and Amber Tan combined for a time of 1:49.10 in the 200 medley relay to earn 11 points in the opening event. The Lions placed second, as Sophie Allen, Rachel Dekar, Yvonne Le and Carolyn Pasque teamed to stop the clock at 1:49.54.
Alexandra Henley, who had three individual victories for UCSD, earned her first in the 1,000 freestyle, stopping the clock at 10:32.09. The Lions managed to take second, third and fourth in that race, earning valuable points. Mary Kate Short placed second in 10:49.56, followed by Terry Rinder (10:49.78) and Jill Dahle (10:56.50).
Zhang earned her first victory in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:55.70 to edge Anji Shakya for UCSD at 1:55.87. Christina Cannata took third at 1:59.62, ensuring the Lions 12 points in the event.
Allen and Tammy Choy went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 59.20 and 59.73, respectively. Dekar continued the LMU hot streak, winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.06, ahead of four consecutive UCSD finishers.
Le and Angelina Prat finished 2-3 in the 200 butterfly, as Olivia Martens took first with a mark of 2:10.12. Le stopped the clock at 2:12.32, followed by Prat at 2:12.61.
Zhang and Pasque found themselves atop the standings in the 50 freestyle, as Zhang won the event in 24.34, followed shortly thereafter by Pasque at 24.72. Zhang was back at it again in the 100 freestyle, winning that event with a time of 52.52. Pasque claimed third at 53.82, taking home three points for the Lions.
The Tritons fought back from there, winning the 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke and 500 freestyle. Henley won the 200 backstroke in 2:05.74, but LMU did manage to take second through fourth, as Choy (2:09.29), Allen (2:09.39) and Noe Vargas (2:11.06) finished in those positions.
Just as they did in the 200 backstroke, LMU managed to take second through fourth in the 500 freestyle, as Rinder (5:19.20), Dahle (5:21.49) and Short (5:22.54) went in that order.
Le won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.26 to end a string of Triton victories, followed by a pair of UCSD swimmers and Prat in fourth at 1:01.07. Choy finished second in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.62, behind Henley at 2:08.94, to wrap-up the individual events.
Needing a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Allen, Pasque, Camille Hopp and Zhang cruised to victory in a time of 3:32.30. Vargas, Katie Rick, Elizabeth Murray and Short took third in 3:41.53, ensuring the slim Lion victory.
LMU returns to action on Sunday when they visit the University of San Diego at 10 a.m.
