SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The LMU swim team finished the first of three busy days of competition on Friday, posting a number of quality swims at the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Though the head-to-head scores for the meet have yet to be released, LMU finished ahead of Concordia and Pepperdine in the invitational-style scoring, and will likely claim a PCH Cup Point for the victory over the Waves.
Rachel Dekar had a great split in the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay, as the team of Sophie Allen (backstroke), Dekar, Isabella Zhang (butterfly) and Carolyn Pasque (freestyle) took first place in a very close race over San Diego, turning in a time of 1:47.82. Dekar returned to the water later in the meet, placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.58), before winning the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:22.60, both season-best times. Camille Hopp also swam in the 100 breaststroke, finishing eighth in 1:09.17.
Seniors Carolyn Pasque and Isbella Zhang continued their hot streak in the sprint freestyle events, as Pasque took a close second in the 50 free with a time of 24.35. Zhang followed in fourth at 24.42. San Diego's Jacquie Kimmel won the event with a time of 24.27. Zhang finished with runner-up points in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 52.89 behind San Diego's Francesca Finucane at 52.22. Pasque was close behind at 53.08, earning a fifth-place finish.
Allen, who was swimming in her first meet at 100% after a stress fracture in her foot and the flu sidelined her for LMU's last two meets against UCLA and at the Malibu Invitational, turned in solid times in both the 100 backstroke (59.53) and 200 backstroke (2:09.09), placing third and fourth, respectively. Joining Allen in the top-eight of the 100 backstroke was Tammy Choy, touching the wall in 1:00.76 to claim sixth. Two other Lion swimmers finished in the top-eight of the 200 backstroke, as Choy claimed fifth behind Allen at 2:11.28 and Dempsey Haynosch stopped the clock at 2:15.03, good for eighth.
Yvonne Le was the lone Lion in the top-eight for the 100 butterfly, finishing sixth in 59.72, while Choy was the only Lion to place in the top-eight for the 400 individual medley, turning in a time of 4:37.67 to earn fifth.
The Lions put a pair of swimmers in the top-eight of the 200 butterfly, as Angelina Prat (2:09.45) and Elizabeth Murray (2:11.14) earned sixth and eighth place, respectively.
Murray returned to the water for the 500 freestyle race, stopping the clock in 5:14.43 to claim fifth overall. Fellow Lion, Terry Rinder, also finished in the top-eight, winning eighth at 5:16.44.
LMU's 200 freestyle relay, consisting of Allen, Pasque, Hopp and Zhang, placed a close second to San Diego, combining for a time of 1:37.33 to USD's 1:36.99 to close competition on Friday. The Lions also placed a relay in fifth, as Dekar, Le, Haynosch and Katie Rick teamed for a mark of 1:42.54.
