LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- LMU senior goalie Andy Stevens has been named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for Nov. 11 after leading the Lions to a pair of defense oriented wins in conference play that helped them move to No. 8 in the national rankings.
The Lions newest ranking will be put to the test instantly as they will play their final regular season game when they travel to No. 9 Long Beach State tonight, Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The Lions are 15-8 on the year and 13-1 in the WWPA.
LMU took big strides toward solidifying a top seed with road wins against previously WWPA-unbeaten UC Davis and Santa Clara last week. The Lions defense, led by Stevens, allowed just six goals and posted four shutout quarters in earning a 6-1 win over No. 13 UC Davis and an 11-5 win over No. 11 Santa Clara.
Stevens averaged just under 10 saves a game as the Lions played three consecutive games on the road against the nationally ranked, No. 1 Cal on Thursday (L, 11-2), followed by the Aggies on Friday and the Broncos on Saturday. He finished the weekend with 29 saves in nine quarters, adding four steals and an assist.
The WWPA Championships begin Friday, Nov. 19 at Sullivan Aquatic Center on the Santa Clara University campus. Matches play through Sunday, Nov. 21. For the complete schedule visit www.TheWWPA.com.
