MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Carolyn Pasque led an impressive showing from the LMU swim team, winning the 100 freestyle event on Saturday afternoon at the Malibu Invitational. The Lions competed in the mid-distance and sprint events on Saturday, as Tammy Choy took LMU's mid-distance high-point award and Rachel Dekar claimed the high-point for the Lions in the sprint events.
Pasque took the 100 freestyle in 53.79, chasing down Cal Poly's Amy Morales in the final 50 yard sprint. Morales touched the wall in 53.96 for a close second place.
Freshman Angelina Prat was the top finisher for the Lions in the 200 butterfly, finishing seventh overall in a time of 2:12.09. Mary Kate Short also swam in the event, placing 10th in 2:15.76. Cal Poly's Amanda Maffris won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.65.
Choy was the lone Lion to finish in the top-10 of the 200 backstroke, stopping the clock at 2:10.85. Cal Poly's Katrina Anderson led five Mustangs in first through fifth place, posting a mark of 2:05.72. Choy was also the only Lion in the top-10 of the 100 backstroke, finishing that race in 1:01.28 to claim fourth.
Dekar claimed a top-10 finish in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:24.42, good for fourth overall. Choy also found a spot amongst the top-10 at seventh, completing the race in 2:29.20.
Zhang was the only swimmer from a school not named Cal Poly to place in the top-10 of the 200 freestyle, sandwiching herself in ninth place at 1:57.12. Pasque narrowly missed a top-10 finish at 1:57.45, good for 11th.
In the first sprint event of the day, the 50 butterfly, Zhang finished sixth in a time of 27.51. Gloria Benefield of Cal Poly won the race in 26.67. Dempsey Haynosch posted a mark of 29.33 in the 50 backstroke to ensure a 10th-place finish.
Dekar swam extremely well in the 50 breaststroke, finishing third overall in a time of 31.69, less than a second behind the winner Kayleen Hicks of Pepperdine at 30.88. Katie Rick (32.44) and Camille Hopp (32.56) also finished in the top-10, placing eighth and 10th, respectively.
Zhang and Pasque both placed in the top-five of the 50 freestyle, with Zhang being edged by Cal Poly's Kelsey Engel by .07 seconds for the top spot. Engels time of 24.70 earned her first place, while Zhang (24.77) and Cal Poly's Morales (24.79) placed second and third. Pasque followed in fourth place with a mark of 25.02.
LMU once again managed a pair of Lions in the top-10 of a race, this time placing Yvonne Le and Zhang in the top-10 of the 100 butterfly. Le touched the wall in 1:00.88 to claim seventh, while Zhang posted a mark of 1:01.08 to win ninth.
Hopp returned to the water in the 100 breaststroke, placing sixth overall in a time of 1:09.90. Pepperdine's Hicks won the event at 1:06.64.
The Lions finished the day strong, placing all three of their 300 freestyle relay teams in the top-10. The "A" squad finished second overall in 2:31.90, while the "B" team touched in 2:39.19 to take seventh. LMU's "C" relay finished ninth in a time of 2:41.76, while Cal Poly's "A" squad won the race at 2:28.47.
The Lions return to the water on November 5 when they visit Cal Poly for the Cal Poly Invitational starting at noon.
