NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - LMU suffered its first defeat of the young season on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Cal State Northridge at Matador Soccer Field. Moy Gomez's goal in the 47th minute held up as the Lions fell to 1-1-0 in their first meeting with the Matadors (1-1-0) since 2004.

Matching up against each other for the first time since LMU's 1-0 victory in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, the Lions and Matadors were again separated by a single goal. After a goalless first half, Gomez scored 69 seconds into the second half to give the Matadors the lead. Sunghyun Kim had the initial shot, which was stopped by LMU senior goalie Patrick Sampson. Sampson was unable to hold onto the ball, however, and the rebound came to Gomez, who put it away.

LMU, which had 10 shots in Tuesday's opener at San Diego State, was held to 11 attempts by the Matadors, who registered 21 shots of their own. The Lions actually did manage to put the ball in the back of the net but sophomore Phil Da Silva's goal in the 63rd minute was disallowed for offside.

Sampson made five saves for the Lions while Brandon Ibarra stopped three shots for the shutout win.

LMU makes its home debut next week after two road games to open the 2009 season. The Lions host San Jose State on Friday at 4 p.m. at Sullivan Field before traveling to 22nd-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
