SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Three Lions were named to the volleyball All-West Coast Conference teams, the conference office announced Wednesday. Senior Emily Day earned a First Team selection for the second consecutive year, while sophomore Becky Stehling garnered All-Conference Honorable Mention. Freshman Ariana Covington rounded-out the three Lions who were lauded, taking home an All-Freshman team nod.
Day led the way for LMU, wrapping-up her second consecutive First-Team bid, running her total to three conference awards with her All-Freshman team selection in 2005. The product of Torrance, Calif. finished the season having played in all 112 sets for the Lions, totaling a team-high 484 kills at a rate of 4.32. Her 28 service aces and 326 digs also led the squad, while her 23 block solos and 67 total blocks placed her second for the Lions. Her accolades for this season include two All-Tournament team selections, a WCC Player of the Week selection, a tournament MVP nod and a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. Her 484 kills at a rate of 4.32 per set each place her 10th in the All-Time single-season LMU record book, while her team-leading 1,303 attacks in 2008 place her eighth. One of just seven members in the 1,000 career dig/1,000 career kills club, she finished her LMU career ranked third all-time in digs (1,181), fourth in total attacks (4,171) and kills (1,521), sixth in kill average (3.61) and sets played (421), eighth in aces (116), and 10th in solo blocks (70) and dig average (2.81).
Stehling followed-up a spectacular freshman year in 2007 by claiming her first All-WCC bid as a sophomore. The native of Austin, Texas posted 277 kills at a rate of 2.47 per set. Her .369 hitting percentage led all LMU players this year, while she was also the team-leader in block solos (26), block assists (52) and total blocks (78), averaging 0.70 blocks per set. She finished the season ranked second on the squad in service aces with 22, and third in attacks (596) and kills. Named to the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic All-Tournament team earlier this season, her .353 career hitting percentage currently places her third in LMU's All-Time record books. Her mark of .369 for this season ranks fourth all-time in the LMU single-season record books.
