Santa Clara, CA - The Loyola Marymount men's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes but the Lions' offense would disappear and Santa Clara University would find their offense for a 58-35 win in West Coast Conference action on Saturday night at the Leavey Center.

The Lions opened the game with a pair of three pointers by Shawn Deadwiler and a jumper by Max Craig to take a 8-0 lead with 16:03 remaining. After a three-point play by Deadwiler, the Lions led 13-6 with 13:22 to play. However, the Lions would score just 22 points the next 23 minutes.

"We came out fast and were aggressive in the first four minutes. But when Santa Clara fought back, we didn't know how to react," said Head Coach Rodney Tention. "We didn't respond and step-up our game. We did not play with the same toughness we did against Portland."

Deadwiler led the Lions with 11 points, all coming in the first half. Corey Counts had nine, all in the second half. Leading scorer Orlando Johnson, who averaged 13.6 points per game coming into the game, went just 2-for-11 from the field but had eight rebounds. Brody Angley led all scorers with 20 points.

Santa Clara finished the game shooting 46.8 percent while the Lions shot just 33.3 percent, hitting just 6-for-21 in the second half and 8-for-21 in the first half. They only went to the free throw line five times and were out-rebounded 37-18. Santa Clara also outscored the Lions in points off turnovers, 22-12.

"We are not learning that you have to play at 110-percent for all 40 minutes or you will not compete in league play," said Tention. "We showed that tonight."

LMU will continue its season-long WCC road trip with Saint Mary's on Monday, Jan. 21 at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on KXLU 88.9 FM and LMULions.com.
