LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount men's tennis topped New Mexico State (8-10) 4-3 Friday at the LMU Tennis Center. The victory makes the Lions (8-12) winners of four of their last five matches.
LMU won the doubles point, winning 8-4 at No. 2 and 8-2 at No. 3.
The Lions then got off to a quick 3-0 lead in singles play after senior Nico
Terrien won 6-4,6-2 at No. 1 and Sam Tadevosian won 6-1,6-2 at No. 2.
"Nico and
Sam really took care of business today," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "Their opponents were tough, but
neither one of our guys let them into the match for a second."
The tide
turned on LMU, as Renzo Maggi and Jacek Twarowski both lost in three
sets to make the match score 3-2.
However, LMU senior Matt
Phillips put the match away for the Lions with a come-from-behind
4-6,6-3,6-3 win at No. 5 to make the score 4-2.
Freshman Nikola Petrov lost a
very tough 7-6,3-6,7-6 match at No.4 to make the final score 4-3 in favor of
the Lions.
"This was a very good win for us today," DeVore said. "New Mexico State is a
solid team that never gives up. We had to really gut this match out.
Matt's win at No.5 for us today really made the difference. He had been
struggling as of late, but this type of win should put him back on track."
Next up for the Lions is conference foe Saint Mary's Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the LMU Tennis
Center. Fans who can't make it to LMU can follow the action on LiveStats right here at www.LMULions.com.
