LOS ANGELES - Returning home for the first match in a three-match home stand, Loyola Marymount men's tennis defeated West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga (6-10) 6-1 at the LMU Tennis Center Thursday. The win gave the Lions (4-10, 1-2 WCC) their first WCC victory of 2007.
The Lions welcomed their return to the LMU Tennis Center after playing 11 of their first 14 matches on the road.
"It was nice to finally play at home," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said.
LMU opened by sweeping the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead on the Bulldogs.
"We swept the doubles matches, so the momentum was with us going into singles play," DeVore said, "but_Gonzaga fought back hard and gave us a tough match."
LMU dropped the first set at No.2, No.3, and No. 4 singles and was in a very tough first set at No. 5. But the Lions fought back and took control of the match soon after.
Senior Nico Terrien and freshman Renzo Maggi put LMU up 3-0 with straight-set wins at No.1 and No.6.
Gonzaga earned its first point when LMU's Nikola Petrov fell 6-2, 6-2 to Marco Antonio Pineda at No.4.
Senior Matt Phillips clinched the match for the Lions with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No.5 over Gonzaga's Cooper Fratt.
The Lions finished off the Zags with three set wins at No.2 and No.3 to make the final score 6-1.
"We didn't play as confidently as I would have liked, especially since we were playing at home, but we will certainly take it," DeVore said. "Hopefully, we can step it up more next week when we host Dartmouth. They have a very deep team this year, so we will have to be up for this one."
