Women's Water Polo

No. 11 LMU Falls to No. 1 USC

Feb. 1, 2007

Los Angeles, CA (Feb. 1) - Loyola Marymount and USC met for the 13th time in women's water polo action on Thursday at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center and the Lions scored a record nine times, the most in the series against the top-ranked Trojans. However, USC scored the most ever by an opponent against LMU in its 10-year history for an 18-9 win.

It was the season opener for both teams as seven different Lions scored against the Trojans to eclipse the mark they set in a 10-8 setback in the 2004 NCAA Championship game against USC. The Trojans, who went up 3-1 after the first frame, scored five goals in each of the remaining three quarters to snap the mark of goals against the Lions originally set by San Diego State with 15 in LMU's first-ever season of water polo in 1998.

Katie Hicks scored her 162nd and 163rd career goals, both on the 6-on-5 attack. Sarah Hamilton also had two goals for the Lions. Fifth-year senior Stacia Peterson had her first goal in almost a year as she moves her career mark to 162. Hicks and Peterson are second and third on the all-time goal list at LMU. Erika Figge scored four goals to lead all teams.

Also scoring for the Lions was Dora Szabolcsi, Kellen Fletcher, Nicole Hughes and Crisara Abrams.

LMU will conclude its two-game homestand to start the 2007 season when they host Hartwick at the Burns Aquatics Center on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.
