Lions Can't Hang On To Early Lead

Feb. 21, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Lions got the hits and the baserunners Tuesday, but just could not push enough across home plate late in the game, as UC Riverside used three runs in the seventh inning to take the 6-3 mid-week match-up at Page Stadium. LMU left 12 runners on base after taking an early 3-0 lead in its first Tuesday home game of 2006.

The Lions (2-9) out-hit UC Riverside (7-4) 10-9, but could not score after the second inning. UCR launched its comeback in the third and took the lead for good in the seventh after a double off the bat of Jaime Pedroza started the one-out rally.

Leadoff batter DeAndre Miller started the Lions off in the first with a single to center field and later scored on an infield groundout by Erik Johnson.

Designated hitter/pitcher Brian Wilson then led off the second inning with a single up the middle. First baseman Kyle Mura brought him in with a double down the left field line. Shortstop Michael Glomb plated Mura on his infield groundout to make it a 3-0 LMU lead in the second inning.

But those three runs off UCR starter Marc Rzepczynski were all the Lions would get, as Highlander relievers Adam Reifer and Taylor Bills held LMU scoreless in their combined four innings of work. Reifer picked up his first win of the season and improved to 1-1, while Bills picked up his first save of 2006.

Sophomore Andy Beal, typically a go-to guy out of the bullpen for LMU, made his first career start Tuesday. He worked 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four. Junior Daniel Macias (0-4) followed, but picked up the loss for the Lions after allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Mura finished the day 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and a run scored for the Lions. Miller (2-for-3, one walk, one run scored) and Wilson (2-for-5, one run scored) had the other multiple-hit outings for LMU.

Pedroza went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Highlanders.

LMU will hit the road for a three-game series at San Jose State this weekend. The series will open Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Fans can follow all of the action as it happens on Lions' All-Access at www.LMULions.com.
