Malet, Phillips Return Undefeated

Jan. 30, 2006

Honolulu, Hawaii - Junior Matt Phillips and senior Carlos Malet remained perfect in 2006, picking up singles wins Saturday at Hawaii, but it was not enough to help the Lions' overcome the Rainbow Warriors. The Lions, playing without standout Nico Terrien, fell 5-2 in Honolulu.

Terrien missed his second match of the season Saturday due to an ankle injury. He is questionable for this weekend's action against Wisconsin, San Francisco, and 37th-ranked San Diego.

"It's always tough when you go into a match without one of your top players," Head Coach Nik DeVore said, "but that is the time when the other players on the team have to step up and fill in the gap. Unfortunately, we weren't up to the task today. Certain individuals competed very well, but a couple of guys just didn't show up."

Phillips and Malet were solid in both outings of the Hawaii road trip, posting two singles wins on the weekend. New Lion Reyniere Roxas also competed well on Saturday, falling in a close 7-6, 7-6 battle with Ryan Sceats, one of the WAC's top players, at the No. 3 spot.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get enough good performances to really compete for the victory," DeVore said. "We have some tough matches coming up this weekend with Wisconsin at home and San Francisco and San Diego on the road. We could be short handed again, so hopefully everyone will rise to the occasion this time and help the team compete at a high level."

The Lions' home opener against Wisconsin is slated for Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Center. Saturday will see the Lions take on San Francisco in San Diego at 1:00. The Lions will then face host No. 37 San Diego on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in their third match in as many days.
