Briefly...
After starting the 2005 season 3-0 with the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic title under their belt, the Lions will hit the road for the first time this season. At the Sacramento State Invitation, LMU will face Columbia, Nevada, and Sacramento State, before returning home to host San Diego State in Gersten Pavilion on Tuesday.
The Tourney Field...
The Lions are a combined 7-1 against two of the tournament's teams, posting a 4-1 record over Nevada and sweeping all three past matches with the Sacramento State Hornets. Columbia and LMU have never met, and their 5:00 p.m. match on Friday will serve as Columbia's first contest of the season.
Lions Earning Votes in the Top-25 Poll...
With seven opponents from the Lions' 2005 schedule being ranked in the top-25 at some point this season, LMU is also earning votes in the poll. The Lions climbed even closer to the top-25 this week after defeating Idaho 3-1 for the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic Championship on Saturday.
The Transfer's Tourney...
LMU's Christianna Reneau led the Lions to a 3-0 start and the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic title this weekend, as she took home the MVP and all-tournament selections. The sophomore transfer recorded 37 kills, 40 digs, a .301 hitting percentage, one ace and a block over 10 games.
Lions Win Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic...
Loyola Marymount volleyball went 3-0 in tournament play and with a 3-1 (30-20, 28-30, 30-26, 30-22) win over Idaho (3-2), claimed the 2005 LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic title Saturday evening in Gersten Pavilion. Sophomore transfer Christianna Reneau was named tournament MVP, after leading the Lions to the championship to kick-off the 2005 LMU season. Four Lions finished with double-digit kills in the championship tilt, as Heather Hughes had a match-high 16. She and senior Dina DeBernardi joined Reneau on the All-Tournament Team. Reneau, Hughes, and freshman setter K.C. Walsh each had double-doubles on the evening as well. The Lions held the Vandals to just a .091 team hitting percentage to win game one 30-20. But Idaho used a seven-point streak late in game two to come from behind and steal the 30-28 contest. With the match tied at one game apiece, the Lions rallied to win the final two games. LMU finished the match out-digging the Vandals 82 to 64.
Lions Sweep Coastal Carolina...
Freshman setter K.C. Walsh led Loyola Marymount volleyball (2-0) to a .376 team hitting percentage and the 3-0 sweep of Coastal Carolina University in day two action at the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic in Gersten Pavilion. With Walsh at the helm of the offense, the Lions hit .640 in game two and rallied off nine straight points during Walsh's service. The nine straight points and .640 team hitting percentage in game two led the Lions to the quick 30-12 victory. Coastal Carolina battled back in the third game, led by Katherine Jensen who finished with 11 kills and seven digs. But the combination of Christianna Reneau and Heather Hughes was too much for the Chanticleers, as the two combined for 25 kills and 17 digs. Senior co-captain Dina DeBernardi added nine kills and hit .529 on the match.
Lions Sweep Opener Against Northeastern...
Loyola Marymount volleyball newcomer Christianna Reneau tallied a double-double in her first match as a Lion, posting 13 kills and 20 digs to lead LMU to the 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-15) sweep of Northeastern Friday evening. The sophomore transfer hit .400 as the Lions started 1-0 at the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic at Gersten Pavilion. Freshman K.C. Walsh added 47 assists and led the LMU offense to a .311 team hitting percentage in her first collegiate match. The Lions opened the 2005 season with just one returner on the floor, starting five newcomers. The Lions held the Huskies to just a .028 team attack percentage in game three to win the final contest by 15. The Huskies led for much of game two and held a 16-10 lead at one point in the contest, thanks in part to Lauren DeTurk who finished with 10 kills. But the Lions battled back to tie the game at 25 and took a three point lead at 28-25 behind the serving of sophomore Heather Hughes. Hughes finished with 12 kills and nine digs.
The Stats on Strat...
