Lions' 18 Hits Not Enough Saturday

April 16, 2005

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - LMU tallied 18 hits, but Santa Clara (17-19, 3-10 WCC) scored runs in eight innings en route to the 18-6 win over the Lions in game two of the West Coast Conference series at Page Stadium Saturday. LMU (14-20, 6-7 WCC) left 14 runners on base, scoring just six runs on the 18 hits.

The Lions' six runs on the afternoon all crossed the plate with two outs, as LMU used the two-out rallies to tally runs in four innings. The Lions put up three in the fifth when senior Jon Oller hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

But Santa Clara pushed runs across in every inning but the eighth, including a five-spot in the seventh inning.

Eight out of nine spots in the Santa Clara lineup recorded hits Saturday, as the Broncos were led by Kevin Drever's 5-for-5, four RBI effort. Santa Clara went the entire contest without a batter striking out.

LMU starter Stephen Kahn suffered the loss for LMU after five innings of work, falling to 2-4 on the season.

Bronco starter Adam Sanabria had almost an identical line to Kahn, but got the run support he needed to earn his first decision of 2005.

Despite being outscored 18-6, the Lions did tally 18 hits on the afternoon, equaling their second-best outing of the season. LMU was led by Eric Farris, Chris Pettit, and Sean Dovel, who each went 3-for-5.

LMU and Santa Clara will play the final game of the three-game series Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
